More evidence he did than Julius Caesar existed, but we won't get into that...

OK, so Jesus and Julius Caesar aside

New topic, after this caught my attention:
www.boingboing.net/

It has me wondering, what do we really want from a game?
Are we after something new to entertain us girl gamers, or are we simply happy with the games that are already being produced for the entire gaming population?

Thoughts?

I think there are slight differences in what we want, but there are some games that aren't necessarily "shopping, fashion, animals and babies". It's hard though. The huge success of the Sims (which we were just talking about) amongst the female market suggests that the fashion/shopping thing is popular in various guises. But then, you could say the same thing for guys with games like Forza, where a large portion is buying and decorating cars...

I think that it's good to have a balance in games available for all genders. It's a bit sad that sometimes games that appeal to girls more than blokes are labelled as "weak" or "casual". But I think it's good to have a variety for everyone, as not every person enjoys decapitating digital humans (or feeding digital babies, for that matter!). Labelling a game as a "girl's game" kind of pushes the blokes aside, just like labelling a game as "blokes only" does for us.

There are some good games that don't aim for a gender, but aim for a specific taste. Like Katamari, for example. That was a really addictive game for both guys and girls. But it was a great game because it wasn't just a re-run of shoot-em-up/racer/roleplay genres.

Perhaps we're after something that is outside the box, rather than just formula rehashed?

I think the general femal population (mostly 'casual' gamers) enjoy games where they can control things. Whether it is the Sims, where you control pretty much every aspect of their lives, or something like Nintendogs, where you look after/control a pet dog.

Not only are these popular 'female' games based around controlling, but, being games, the player can walk away at any time.

I think that games should not be aimed at a particular gender, as that is too broad a topic. Instead, they should aim at innovation, exloration, and niches in the gaming world that need to be filled. Like biinkii said, they need to aim for different tastes.

I think it's good to see female gamers getting into it. I've come across so many during my online travels.

It is very generalised to say that certain games are for the ladies. I've played many online shooters (Call Of Duty, Halo) and many online racers where the ladies love giving the guys are run for their money.

I think I'd check it out if I was under 12...

Maybe that's the problem. Maybe there are games that are supposedly aimed for "girl gamers", when what they actually mean is "pre-teen girl gamers". I've noticed a whole slab of those type of games for both the Wii and DS. Maybe they're trying to get little girls away from their pink PS2s...

I'm with you, Phat. I love a bit of Halo action now and then (just 'cos we haven't got the latest hardware to move on to Call of Duty!) I also like games I can walk away from and come back to when I have a spare half hour. Some games are specifically aimed at gamers who have a spare 8 hour stretch to spend on a game. Unfortunately for some of us, tho, we can't sit at the console for the whole day!

I'd say more towards getting them sucked in with games about babies so that they spend money on the console.

Lol, i looked at it at EB the other day.
It looks terrible, as 80% of the other games do as well.
At least you know its not just girl games that are rubbish!

I have a question.

Is it bad to be beaten at a video game by a girl?
Did I say beaten? What I meant to say was "annihilated".

What do you mean?? I'm just asking.

hehehe. I don't think it is. My girlfriend easily beats me at Tetris Attack on the Super Nintendo all the time. I come close to beating her sometimes, but never get there...

Of course not! As long as the only reason you've been beaten is because you tried your hardest and lost anyway.
The biggest insult ever to a girl would be to let them win.

Have any of you guys ever done that? Gone easy on a girl just because you didn't think she could beat you fair and square?

Maybe I should change the "guys" to "men/boys" then

Or, have any of you girls felt like you'd had some "men/boys" go easy on you?

Sure i think most of us have had it done to us. It's horrible, but it's great when you can show them that you really can out game them.

Yes, I sometimes do go easy on people, but thats only because they have either never touched a game in their life or never played the game before.

Consequently a lot of females are not interested in the games or don't play games that males play. But I do that to male gamers too, so I'm not sexist thats only in person though, if its online pfff who knows if you are a girl or not lol.

This news is a little old (its from January this year), but i just heard about these funky girl gamers in the Philippines who've started a new Gaming Mag: PlayGround Magazine.

Lol - at first the title didnt suggest to me that this was a gaming mag, but indeed it is - and it looks cool too.

I think its great to see these women taking on a male dominated field (ie gaming) and doing it with a grace and professionalism which actually DOESNT require them to exploit their gender to make it popular. They're more interested in talking about gaming and its part in their culture in the Philippines.

I think we'd have to applaud these girls for taking the step!
I thought you might like to see!

That would suggest that you have an expectation that girls will be worse than you at games...would it not?
