Give Castaway a miss. It's kinda OK for a while, but as soon as you're rescued the point of the game drops to about zero. Less space for interesting things to do...

PC version's better 'cos you can add expansion packs etc.

I was driving my kid to a Dr's appointment today and there was a huge billboard advertising the WiiFit game.

I couldn't read it as I was driving at the time (people get narky when you collide with them) and my kid was like "LOOK MUMMY WIIFIT IS FAMOUS!!" hahah

She is looking forward to it as much as I am. She wants to play the panguin game.

OK I got a look at the Wii Fit billboard the other day whilst stopped at the lights on my way to work.

Slogan said something like "A personal trainer you can store under your couch" Had a massive picture of the Wii Balance Board on there too.

I just pre-ordered it from Dstore, $129.95 and $1 postage, I couldn't walk past that deal. As I was a new customer I also got a new customer credit of $5.95 on my account, I'll probably use it for something else eventually.

They take BPay as well! I used my CC just in case it goes sour, I can chargeback that way.

I am so looking forward to Wii Fit. Hopefully it will be so much fun it won't seem like excercise.

Don't worry, I'm sure there will be an "entertainment" expansion pack at some point that will have wii-like behaviour...

Turn on your Wii, load up The Sims, sit your little man on the couch, and then play the Wii - virtually.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did do that, and even less surprised that people would buy it, and think about how new and exciting it was. Not one of them stopping to think that you could do the same thing, but in the real world.

See, I play games for an escape. To have the ability to do things that I could never do in real life, or perform actions that make my brain active when my body just wants to give up for the day. How one could ever want to use that time to do things that one could do in normal life bemuses me. I don't think I'll ever understand it no matter how many different ways it's put to me :\

Maybe it's about the ability to control another world that is the attraction? You feel you are not in control of the world around you, your life, so it's an escape to be able to get these little people doing what you want them to? To have a world that behaves in the way that you wish the real world would? To be able to do things that you never would in real life - like letting your people drown in a pool

Maybe I just answered my own question. It is kind of an escape, to another world where you are not constrained by the bounderies that real life holds you down with.

But, could having that place to vent your desires be taking away your desires to make things better in your real life?

Do you think you can learn things from this other little world that you control?

Ahhhh don't mind me. I'm just thinking out loud. And I think I'm trying to make The Sims too complicated.

People I nurse who are disabled (especially the tetra and quadriplegics) love playing games as it truly is an escape. Some of the technology to enable them to do this surpasses most sci-fi I have seen.

I think the theme of control is a big one Omi. At least gaming is a non-violent non-self harming way of gaining a sense of control

Ouch that stings. I have never really thought of it as a control issue till you mentioned it. But yeah I guess it is a world where I can control everything, all thought I feel in control of my real world as much as humanly possible. I think for me it's mostly a game that doesn't ask a lot from me, like Endless Ocean, a veg out game.

Omi - I agree with everything you said actually. I don't think you are reading too much into the Sims.

In fact, you aren't really reading into the game itself, but rather the reasons people play it.

Theres some valid points there omi,
Ive never really thought of it as a control issue, but more mindless fun, but what you're saying certainately does make you rethink that idea.
I guess if we were to look further into it maybe that control issue would then go on to reflect a trend in society, considering the popularity of the games worldwide.
Maybe our society and the next generation especially are feeling powerless, and this is a way of regaining control.
If so though, on the other hand maybe its better that it's done with a game, rather then being acted out in a real life situation...

I thought it was a fun little game, theres plenty to do and a fair bit of variety, but its not really like the other 'Sims' branded games, theres more of a carpentarial side to this one!

If you're a big Sims fan, MySims might be disappointing because all the things that make Sims interesting (sleep/food/bathroom/relationships) aren't a factor. You can just keep your character going 24 hours a day and they don't get hungry/tired/smelly. So the main thing is the personalities of people you invite to the town, the stuff you make for them, and whether you want to make them happy or not. There's also lots and lots of collecting fruit, prospecting for "essences" etc to make stuff. That's a bit boring.

Having said that, it kept me interested for lots longer than Sims Castaway ever did. I'd recommend it if you can find it cheap.
