the majority of nintendo gamers I know nowdays are women.I believe its because the Wii has leveled the playing field once and for all, There is no way in hell my gf could beat me in a traditional game of bowling, but when you put her in front of the Wii she is a bowling pro. Boxing is the same...when I beat her in real life she puts up very little resistance but when we play Wii sports she is often the victor [aren't you glad I am only joking] I used to think that girl gamers were only interested in playing games like the sims, where you can play house and dress ups but my opinion changed when I discovered how many girls played WoW [I think the dress up part plays a big part of that] I think girl gamers should be encouraged, I love that they have come into my world.I GIRL GAMERS!

My misses likes playing games occasionally, she used to play 2D shooters back in the NES/SNES days, but hasn't played anything in between because the fancy 3D games didn't interest her. Now recently she has been playing my DS and Wii, on the DS it's Brain Training and the mini games of The New Super Mario Bros. On the wii it was Wii sports which she scored pro in more than one event, then I got here Warioware Smotth moves, and now she's really into Link's crossbow training scoring silver on all stages and now working for gold/platinum now.
Links Crossbow she really enjoyed and I was surprised to see her playing for long periods of time.
Nintendo have done a good job of making the gaming market appeal to everyone. She wont even give my PS3 a second look, man I can't even get her to watch a blu-ray

anyway, since I got my DS my sis (who used to play the occasional game, now only rarely touches the sims *shudder*) keeps taking it to play theme park lol she's in love with that game

and she's now begging me to get some of the various sims ds games.

oh, and she's older than me. so I've kinda got her BACK into gaming.

I can't remember when I started gaming. I've been playing for so long that my earliest memories are of games. lol

The first console that I owned was a PSX that I got for my birthday when I started high school (lol that was a long time ago). Every other console before that were for my brother and I to share.

Anyway, I think that there are more female gamers than we think.
Most just keep quiet about it.
One reason I believe is society. I know that I don't talk to my friends in reality about games because I get the impression that they think it makes me some kind of weird anti-social loser, sort of like the stereo type of gamers.
So I think we'll see a lot more women coming out of the gaming closet when the majority of people stop treating video games as some creepy obsession only reserved for loners and computer geeks.

anyway, I agree with you Omi, it's such a guy dominated industry, hell, when I walked into EB yesterday I was shocked to see the first female salesperson!

I had exactly the same experience at EB tonight with a female serving. Was pretty impressed myself. Not only do I not see female staff in these stores, but I hardly see any female shoppers unless it is a mother with her young sons.

I started out with games back with the Atari. As an only child I know it was specifically brought for me but who brought it or why, I can't say I remember. A friend in primary school (female as well) ended up getting a Sega and I fell in love with that at her place - Alex The Kidd , no purchased games from memory. She then got a handheld game, for the life of me I cannot remember what it was but I think it was also made by sega. This saw her mother sell her Sega to my family for me.

Then came the early gameboy (grey) which I managed to go through 2 of. Then came a black case one. During all this time I spent many hours with my best friends brother playing whatever incarnation of the Nintendo his family had brought him most recently.

From here I moved onto PC games for quite a few years - duke nukem, lemmings and cosmo appear to be the standout ones in my memory from

I don't know, I think it's a stereotypical thing. Guys go and play games and drink beer while girls watch and cheer em on. Or something like that.

I guess girl's think they should do girly stuff like shopping and "doing their nails" and I guess they don't get interested.

I think girls need to get motivated by other gamers like giving a console for their birthday or something and teaching them how to play.

I was a handheld person so consoles weren't really my thing. My first one was this asian thing which I don't know what it's called and then a SNES, N64, PS1 and then the Wii. So big jump there

I guess I'm one of the odd ones then. I love to do all those "girly things" like go shopping & getting my nails done but then I can play video games with the best of them. My boyfriend & I even have "Video Game Night" where we stay in drink, & just play 360 or Wii.

I'm thinking that most girls just don't want to waste their time with playing. Just like most guys don't want to waste their time shopping. If there was a way we could show girls how great it is to be a female gamer I think more would be apt to play.

Anyway i'm glad more girl gamers are showing up now because thanks to the Wii's simple and fun games, everyone can enjoy a game every now then. Hopefully i'll be seeing them during online battles to see what they're really made of

Oh dear K-man. Yep, thanks to the simpleness of the Wii, even girls can play games!

While I don't think that's quite what you meant, it does have a valid point in there somewhere. I think one of the main reasons that girls aren't as majorly into gaming is because it is stereotyped as a boy's toy, so most girls don't even think to try it out. But with the Wii aiming it's games at the 'everyone' market, 'everyone' is having a go! I think that's making gaming in general a more socially acceptable past-time.

I introduced my sister to my Wii a little while ago, this is a girl that's never played a game beyond solitare (she even sucked at that :-P) but she loved Wii Sports, and was laughing her head off at Wario-ware. She'd never "realised games could be so much fun".

I'm trying to spread the gaming joy to my whole family, you see. My mum now has a ds, and I found it quite amusing the other day to have her explaining a game to me that I bought her for chrissie! My niece and nephew now want one of these cool toys that their cool-arse nanna has, and I'm trying to convince my sister to buy them a Wii! Ahh, spread the gaming love There's a game out there to appeal to anyone, they just haven't played it yet, but when they do they'll all be hooked! mwahahaha

Where are these statistics that you are referring to?

I remember a little while ago some statistics were released stating a fairly large portion (can't remember exact percentages) of casual gamers were female. Which everyone went into a big hoo-har about it, asking where all these girl gamers were. But it's not saying much, I mean, a casual gamer could be referred as someone that plays a game once a month, once a year, so all that pretty much said was that there aren't many girl gamers out there. duh!

I would like to see some official statistics of the percentages of girls vs guys that actually own a console, or a gaming PC, that would say a lot more than how many are casual gamers

So why did you decide to buy a Wii for yourself?
Did/do you ever play the other consoles? Or were they just not your thing? Do you have to fight for TV rights to decide what console gets played and who's playing it now?!
