Routers firmware up to date?

He's pretty much tried everything. As he said, the only time the modem doesn't disconnect from the internet is when the external HDD is plugged into the Laptop with a wireless connection to the modem/router

phatbass82 said: Yeah, but you didn't answer his question, do you have UPnP enabled in your modem settings. Go into the settings and have a look around for it if you're unsure. By default, it should be enabled. If it isn't, then enable it. I was also thinking that this could be the problem, but I didn't think it would be.

jac33au said: Yeah check UPnP mate, If not try a factory restore on the router.

But yeah plugging in a USB device and your net ****ting itself sounds like UPnP.

Phatbass and I will fix it lol.

Im trying it now

Ok.

UPnP was enabled so i unchecked it, hit apply, reset the modem(soft reset) and tried the drive. Didnt work.

So then i did a full factory reset, unchecked UPnP and tried it again. no good.

It might be worth noting that it only does it to hard wired computers. when i connect it to my laptop its fine.

By the looks of it, I think phat wanted you to keep it enabled.

Oh, thanks for the reminder, Rus_A7

Jac33au, make sure you re-enabled UPnP, otherwise you could have problems in the future.

I had already put UPnP back on.

I have not installed a driver for either device as they dont require one. The firmware is the newest possible.

Hmm. Maybe you need to start looking at the programs that are running on your PC (both wired PC's). And if this doesn't help, formatting both PC's (or just the one your girlfriend doesn't use) and seeing if it works without any programs installed.

Failing that, then it's definately a modem problem...unless you are able to try your external HDD on someone else's internet with a different modem. Obviously if it does happen there, it's the external HDD.

Yeh unfortunately i cant format either of them right now so thats out. Another modem might be the answer. There is no real similarity between the computers. One is Vista one is XP pro. Some of the same programs such as the antivirus, spyware softwares.

Hmm...

I finally got my PC with Vista Ultimate to work on a TV. I think the latest graphics drivers helped. I don't know if this might work for you?

Untested on a plasma.

Well, I assume that if it works on a regular TV, then it should work on a plasma for me. I suppose I could be wrong. You can only try, i guess. Just make sure you download the latest drivers.

Try using drivers from the hard drive manufacturers website?

Could be dodgy inbuilt XP drivers

lol. Crap, I didn't realise maxtor was taken over by Seagate...wow, weird. I'm looking for jac33au. I did suggest that one to him, but not from the website...

jac33au, if you're keen, try from this link:

Are you talking about the hdd/modem? If so it happens on both vista and xp.

If your talking about the screen its only vista. It doesnt let you choose the right resolution to display on a plasma. XP works perfect.

Party people. I've just bought an 22" LCD screen. I ended up going for the Asus updated black model (too excited to remember model numbers). This screen is awesome. Not bad for my first LCD...now I just have to buy cables to hook up my xbox 360...

Not that I know of. Has it only happened once or does it keep doing it whenever you turn the computer on? Is it USB or PS2 keyboard. If it's USB, try using another USB port.

What brand keyboard is it?

if it's wirless it could be getting interfeard by other signals, if it is logitec you can encrypt it if you have setpoint installed... or it could be the batteries.
