Where were you on the 7th of December 2006 ?

Many people will for some time remember the 7th of December 2006. They will remeber this as the much anticipated release day of the Nintendo Wii. It will be remembered as the day people finally got the chance to open the white box that helped them proudly carry their WII from their store of choice to their homes. It will also be remebered as the day when WII Sports was packaged in that white box.

At first glance WII Sports seems nothing more then a theme based mini game compilation. Something that you could use whilst in between games or until you could save enough to purchase your first "real" game. How first glances can be deceiving.

The concept was simple 5 games based on real life sports. Baseball, Bowling, Golf, Tennis and Boxing. Each emulating the real life sports. The graphics whilst crisp and neat where simple and quite often a talking point. Yet the functionality of the WII-Mote made it an emersive game in which you would be moving around almost without noticing it. The fact that your MII (a mini version of yourself) could be ported to the game made it quite enjoyable and just that little bit more emersive. The games are all fun to just pick up and play. But where this game really sells itself is with the dpeth that it offers. Contrary to early word from the US this game really does contain depth and has enough mini games and challenges to keep people going for as long as any other game out there on the shelves.

To look at and review this game properly it needs to be looked at individually and as a whole.

Baseball was really the suprise packet of wii sports. The fact that feilding is automatic makes it fun swinging the mote round and watching your exact movements with the mote be replicated on screen with the bat was truelly amazing.

Then there is Bowling, dubbed everyones favourite. Truelly the most lifelike of all the games on Sports. The icing on its cake is the fact that four people can play with the one mote.

That brings me to golf. Personally im not a golf buff and found this one the most difficult to pick up. Yet after a little practice and tuition from a fellow golf fan I was off and running.

Next comes my personal favourite Tennis a very simple concept or swinging the racket in a doubles game of tennis. The fact that movement isnt an issue makes this game simple and fun.

Boxing is the fifth and final game offered with sports. This game can be quite enjoyable whilst offering a neat little workout. This game is deffinitelly enjoyed as two player with a friend as you try and beat the crap out of each other on screen. This is where the Mii's really work well.

Wii sports offers great replay value with the addition of mini training games as well as a fitness age tester. These little inclusions keep you comming back to sports. As they count scores and give you something to challenge yourself to beat.

The common perception is that WII sports is a "free game". Im of the firm beleif that nothing is free and the cost of WII sports was factored into the 399 price tag. Yet having said that it was worth every cent.

On December the 7th I was playing WII sports emersing myself in the next generation of video games. Today im still playing this one.
