Wii Sports - The game your parents have been waiting for you to play! - 8/10

Wii Sports just might be the BEST launch title to come with any console since...EVER! It's a perfect demonstration of the Wii console's wireless and motion sensing features that grab you by the arms and latch you onto the screen for hours.
However, as fun and innovative the control scheme is, the game does have it's faults which can be blamed on the controls primarily.

The games itself is intended as a multiplayer title with five mini-games to play by yourself or with friends. These mini games are, of course, various sports that Nintendo thought "Hey, I reckon the Wii remote would be awesome to use in this sport!". You get the opportunity to play either Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Boxing or Bowling which all use the Wii remote and nunchuck controllers appropriately.

The game can be enjoyable if you're patient. Like most games, the difficulty of the opposition becomes more intense as your progress through your skill level and you must ultimately exercise all your training skills in order to progress further into the game. As I said, it CAN be fun but losing six or seven times in a row to a "Pro" status boxer in Wii Boxing will tick you off and tempt you to play something else...unless you like a challenge.
With that said, the game is challenging for the determined yet simple for the casual gamer or the "too-young-to-care" gamer. You will find yourself in front of the screen for hours bowling strikes or winning tennis matches at 40 - love.

However, one major problem with the game isn't necessarily the software but more or less the motion sensing capabilities. The idea of a sensor bar has been around for years and is used in many things today apart from the Wii. But there's a reason why it was never adapted into gaming consoles until now - unreliability. The motion sensor can be set off too much or too little by the smallest of bad swings. You will find yourself with this problem thoroughly during Wii Golf where the sensitivity of the sensor bar will leave you with a triple bogey rather than that birdie you sought after to eagerly. A similar problem occurs with tennis where the direction of your swing can't really determine where your balls go. You may want to hit the ball at that winning gap but find yourself hitting it back to your opponent for the next ten grueling minutes.
But not all the mini games have this problem with the sensor bar and Wii remote. Some games respond excellently to the controls such as Boxing and Bowling and give you hours of endless fun.

One more problem I think I should mention is the after effects of "PLAYING HARD". Yes...you know the stories...Wii Injuries. After a few sets of tennis or boxing, you WILL start to feel the burn in your muscles...just like a real athlete. The key to avoiding this pain is to take it easy! It's not a real game of tennis so you don't have to swing as hard as you can to get your opponent out. You CAN play sitting down...but my excuse will always be "It's more fun to play standing"...which is true.
But truth be told...this is the game your parents have been waiting for you to play. It can be a very exhausting activity if you want it to be and give you a little workout right there in your living room (provided you have enough space to move). Plus, Wii fitness will get you hooked and drag you back everyday just like Brain Training on the DS.

Concluding this review, I have to say...Wii Sports is a real party starter. You and your mates will have a blast playing this stylish and fun game for hours. I'm really glad Nintendo opted to choose this title to come with the Wii. Nobody wants to play a mere demo on launch nor do they want to play something that will bore them. Nintendo have covered all aspects of fun and leisure with this game.
However, the sensor sensitivity and Wii remote will bring up some problems for you in the long run in some sports so it's best to prepare yourself for some disappointment when playing some games.

El Raro's score: 8/10.

excellent review my friend, but i think you are confusing the sensor bar with the motion sensing of the wii remote. The senson bar isn't used in any of the games (only in the menu and that's by choice, i think you can use the D pad).

I think you diasgree with the oversimplification of controls, like tennis being about timing only, not about direction, power and spin.

who needs to go outside to play sports when you can just play Wii sports, what a great game it turned lazy people into active people. They should make a Wii sports 2 with even more sports to play.

very nice review although i have one small gripe...

where you say...
"similar problem occurs with tennis where the direction of your swing can't really determine where your balls go. You may want to hit the ball at that winning gap but find yourself hitting it back to your opponent for the next ten grueling minutes"

Aiming where you hit the ball in tennis is all about timing as it is in Wii Sports. If you hit the ball early the ball will go across your body (to the left if you are a right hander hitting a forehand) or if you hit it late it will go the other way, the same thing goes in baseball. My only problem with Tennis is that there is a perfect return that when the opposition is serving to your forehand if you return it just right it will beat them every time.
