Set initially in Los Angeles, and ending in Toyko, this samurai based FPS had the opportunity to challenge the way we approach playing this genre. At this early point in my experience it acheives this on some levels, and falls a little short on others. I'm roughly halfway through at the moment, so here are my observations so far. The ability to hide and replenish life makes this game playable, because without you'd have a rough time getting through the first 5 minutes of Red Steel. The biggest talking point of this game worldwide however is the polar difference in opinion relating to the control of this FPS. My take on it is this: Initially, yes they are very frustrating and tiresome, but with some experimentation with the in game sensitivity control, you can begin to find a happy medium of control. Yes, in some parts of the game (Angels Massage Parlour being one) you tend to lose track of who's shooting where and how many there are, but once again with patience and some good old fashioned hiding to slow the battle down, you can get past it. An issue which does present itself is that some of the enemies are very hard to see in some levels. This may change with the game connected to component, but at the moment it's a little bugbear that can be irritating. The Round Boss battles with the swords i actually found quite natural, contrary to recent reviews. The parry ability and the slashing are reproduced quite accurately which surprised me after the initial struggles with the general movement and control. Only being halfway through this game my opinion may change again, but at this point i'm quite happy with the purchase. The game probably won't be a long term thing, but after being out of gaming for so long it's a challenge that i'm enjoying at the moment.
