Red Steel [Multiplayer Review] - 7/10

I’m going to concentrate on the multiplayer aspect of the game for this review, as I’ve spent a few nights with mates playing this. First time playing was a little difficult to get used to (controls and split screen) but as you progress (and get that first kill against one of those mates you just love to see suffer) you forget all the negatives and the game is on! First of all, finding out the best distance from the TV and sensor bar is hugely important as I have found myself unexplainably spinning in circles a few times as someone cruelly stalked me until I gained composure only to receive a deathly blow to the head! Don’t let this put you off because this experience was/and can be corrected, when you’ve found that suitable distance the wiimotes response is fine and to back this up we have comfortably performed headshots on numerous occasions with the pistol you are originally equipped with from both close and far range. Therefore, from my experiences if set up correctly, I have found the accuracy and response of the game and wiimote to be great

One thing I am impressed with whilst playing with split screen, is the ability for each player to perform their actions to the fullest without being limited to smaller movements (e.g. aiming, thrusting down to open doors and pick up weapons) without interfering with another players screen. Not that you need to thrust your wiimote as far as the person next to you!

Multiplayer Red Steel consists of three different game modes, four maps, and a bonuses feature. The standard Death match all on all is probably the best option (Unless one of your mates is an absolute FPS Gun) then probably Team Death match is the way to go and stick them with the weakest player, someone you can pick on to keep the game close!
Having said this, I recommend new players to the game to give team death match a go because its jus plain fun exploring the maps with someone else trying to hunt others down or being hunted, remember safety in numbers! There is another mode which involves you being given a mission by phone, and then there is a time limit for you to complete this objective. We have played this a couple times and still can’t quite understand what’s going on, so we have ignored this one. The bonuses feature basically gives you the option to choose between quicker health recovery, add more damage to your attack, or have unlimited ammo. Only when you have built up your bonus meter by killing may you use your chosen bonus, but keep in mind it’s only for a certain amount of time until the meter runs out!

First time players will think where the hell am I being shot from, since there is no radar unlike Goldeneye! Don’t worry, once you’ve played through all the maps a couple times you become aware of certain areas and with a little peek at the other players screen, you’ll know where they are. There is an auto lock feature which you may want to either enable/disable, which basically highlights an opponent within a square field however still requires you to aim at them with the wiimote. A personal favourite level is the Docks, a battle for supremacy takes place for the sniper rifle, even though it’s not absolutely crucial to have this but it’s a great level to find high ground and enjoy picking off your enemy.

Weapons that are included in the multiplayer are:
Grenade
Pistols (45 Cal, P99, MP 412)
M4 Shotgun
Assault Rifle
SCAR
TYPE 12 Automatic Shotgun
Sniper Rifle
Uzi

The pistols are often disregarded straight away but having played through a few times I have found the pistols to be quite powerful and useful. This is because there is no recoil compared with the more powerful automatic weapons, therefore with a nice headshot or two you have a great chance of wasting your opponent before they waste you! Grenades take quite a bit of practice as you must control height with the wiimote, distance and speed with the nunchuck whilst pressing down on the directional pad for a desired result. Once you’ve mastered the grenade throwing it potentially is fun when launching a grenade at someone trapped in a corner, or raiding a room where the enemy await, or just leaving it there as a farewell present as you are about to die and their standing right beside you! Apparently swinging up on the nunchuck stuns your opponent with a blow leaving them unconscious for 10 seconds leaving you to decide their fate. Tried this and only works occasionally for me so don’t depend on this move, unless I’m doing something wrong (ha-ha most probably).

Anyway, overall the multiplayer for Red Steel is decent I myself have enjoyed some intense battles between some mates and for a launch title I think this game will keep us going until something bigger and better comes out.

Lack of maps in Red Steel multiplayer is horrible. Needs 4x more maps to be a top quality multiplayer game!

What do you give this game outta ten man?

Well i play it at your house and id have to agree its a really fun game to play!
I give it a high 7 low 8 dont wanna be too bias.

In my opinion it needs more levels and few more features with the multiplayer other than that its a good FPS.

The learning curve aint that long unless your a total noob at FPS'! The only draw back to the current game is the grenade funtion. It incorporates good movement of the nunchuck but is unreliable to use quickly and effectively.
