[2008-03-26] SSBB Update Released for Wiikey!

We are pleased to be able to announce the release of Firmware Update 1.9s for Wiikey which is available in the resources section. This fixes the issue with original SSBB discs not working and it should also no longer be possible to render the chip inoperable by using patched config discs. A new config option to block system updates from DVD is also supported. The 1.9s config discs will be released by the end of this week.

Well it does, in a way. But it seems its still kind of useless.

Ozmodchips said:Here is an interesting point.....

I set update blocking to on
I set dev mod to on...

I inserted the same SSBB disc and it didnt ask for an update!
I click start and i get a black screen (it need the update to run)

But interesting that the update is kind of blick blocked from the config disc. The SSBB is a RAW DL ISO, untouched by truncha

More info:

Ozmodchips said:
The update:
-Runs are pretty much the same speed as the 1.9g update. It does a test, and then dump.
- No Ass
- No 'segaaa'
- No homer

Config Disc:
-Runs fine without the need for GCOS, even when region free is turned off. FINALLY!

Config Disc Menu:
- As you can see there are a couple of new options on the main menu.
- The Wiikey disc dumper has been taken out
- Classic IPL --> Click on it will make the menu freeze for about 3 seconds, and then the original GC logo/animation will run....then it will return back to the config menu. No idea about the use of this.

Wiikey config options:
- New options are Dev Mode and Block updates.
- The picture you see below are the default settings when you enter the menu.
- Block updates is set to on, but it didn't seem to block updates.
- Setting Dev mode to on (and leaving block updates on) seems to totally bypass game updates, and games run fine if the update is not needed.
- Allows you to change the drive speed, but unfortunately our tests have shown so far that it is still locked to 3x This is the point of a BETA though, so fingers crossed it will be fixed.

Other fixes:
- SSBB retail working fine on my PAL and NTSC-U machine.
- SMG still working!

hey ozmodchps, i don't know if you have tried it already but apparently someone has managed to get the retail SSBB working on a WiiKey modded Wii by doing the following:

1) Enter the Disc channel from the main menu
2) Insert SSBB disc
3) Wait for the disc to be detected
4) Press the power button on the remote to put the Wii on standby mode
5) Turn the Wii back on
6) When the main menu appears, the disc channel should already display SSBB. You can then start the game. THIS IS UNCONFIRMED, though.

However, now that a new Wiikey firmware is imminent, it doesn't matter.

from the readme.txt:

WiiKey Update 1.9s

This is a cumulative update for wiikey, fixing a few bugs and adding some new features.

Bugs fixed
-----------

- Issue with original Super Smash Bros Brawl discs not working fixed
- It should now not be possible to render the chip inoperable by using patched config discs

New features
--------------

- DVD update blocker: A new config option to block system updates from DVD. This
prevents the Wii from loading a system update for another region.
- Dev Mode: Remaps drive debug commands from 0xFx to 0x2x

Hey-I'm a newbie at this stuff and only recently got a wiikey to play brawl...but I got a few questions about this update-
Does this update make an original copy of SSBB from the US work?
Is the DVD update blocker permanently on-or do you have to instert the update disc, turn it on, take out the disc and then put in the game?

If yes for both-YAY-I'm so getting it!!!

EDIT:Just downloaded the patch-pretty amazing seeing that from a .4MB file, it expands 100x to a 40MB file...Just thought I might let you know

it should always be on (that's the default setting) - but i don't know if it works 100%. why don't you try it yourself and let us know?

But if I get Brawl and put it in, would there be a chance that it brick my wii if I update the wii's firmware (not the wiikey)?
EDIT:Just updated-still says 'segaaaaa....'
p.s. is there any way to check the firmware of your wiikey? And how do you config the wiikey? (I got my wiikey installed by a company and updated it themselves...)

cool.... does anyone know if this changes the way someone would need to burn a ntsc backup of ssbb? does this mean i wouldn't need to apply the brick blocker anymore?

SSBB requires the update to run. Without it, it won't work at all. I think it has something to do with allowing the Wii to read Dual Layer discs.

By the way:
Sometime around the end of this week the new config discs will be released.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!! awesomeness
and the new no update feature should be good cause now ppl less prone to bricking their wii as well as might not need to do those patch thingys b4 playing import games e.g. regionfrii

I was wondering if we needed to filechop this file to gcube size b4 we burn it or can we just burn the 40mb file straight from the disc

Hi Scorpion72,

Do you have it running? Its a NTSC version of the game though, so I am worried about causing issues if I install the update?!?!?

Does anyone know the best way for me to burn my NTSC backup to play on a pal WII?

If this talk isn't allowed I apologise.... and I will remove my post....

Yes, I have it running. I followed this guide to get it running on my Pal console.

Hope that helps.

Yeah it works without needing to file chop.

thanks Scorpion72,

Although I am sure I can follow it, that looks like a rather complicated method...

I have 1.9g and 3.2E on a PAL Wii with SSBB NTSC.

I was under the impression that I could just run brickblocker and regionfri on it then burn it? Someone in that same post said this

"I have much easier. Works on my PAL Wiikey (latest software both Wii and Wiikey)

1 - Use RegionFrii on the ISO
2 - Use Brickblocker
3 - Burn ISO with Nero (I did no layerbreak)
4 - Put game in Wii.

No install needed, no double channels. "

I've also heard the game should run at 50Hz....not 60 any truth in that??

many thanks mate!
