The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 10/10
As a long devoted fan of the Zelda franchise I approach new additions to the series with equal measures of excitment and anxiety. Will this Zelda game be the one to fall from grace; to lose, as one might say, it's "legendary" status? To find out I pulled on my tights, sharpened my sword and saddled up the horse. For better or worse, it was going to be an adventure.
Before I even laid hands upon the game I spent the weeks leading up to the games release systematically completing the Zelda games one-by-one. I wanted to get "in the zone." After saving Hyrule several times I was ready to see what this new installment had for me. I should note here that I have only played the Wii version and let me make it perfectly clear, the new controls are a step beyond what the previous Zelda titles have been able to deliver. Actually being able to aim the bow and swing the sword with the Wiimote really immerses you in the game. One of my fears would be the the new "active" nature of the wii might make it actually physically strenuous to play an epic game like Zelda, but infact it is even more comfortable than ever. The wireless nature of the Wiimote and the "one in one hand, one in the other" relationship it shares with the nunchuck means that I can sit (or stand) at a comfortable distance and hold the controller in a way that feels natural and comfortable in a way that, say, a gamecube controller never would.
Graphics and sound are only of Gamecube standard, but that's to be expected seeing as how this game was primarily designed for that platform. Technically, the Wii version is a port after all. Anyway as far as Gamecube standard goes, this would be graphically one of the best Gamecube games to be made.
The story of Twilight Princess is both enchanting and compelling. I don't want to give anything away, so let me just say this. The story follows all the trends of the previous titles but encorporates a new "dark" Hyrule called the Twilight Realm, ruled by an evil King called Zant. It is in this realm that Link assumes the form of a wolf and where many of the new gameplay elements emerge. In a similar vein to the child/adult situation in Ocarina of Time or the mask situation in Majora's Mask, Link must switch between human and wolf form to progress through the game. Whilst the human form harbours many of the classic elements of gameplay (using the sword, items, etc.) the wolf form introduces us to new gameplay elemts such as "sensing", digging and talking to animals.
In the end Twilight Princess is a Zelda game which manages to remain faithful to the series whilst never feeling recycled. As it stands it is the "must-have" game for the Wii so far.
