If I were to pick one of the most questionable governments of the last 30 years, they would take the cake. Though they did cause one of the best political speeches of Australia's history. God may well save the Queen, but nothing will save crazynites.

Yep. It's unfortuante to think that a lot of people will be voting for Rudd just because they don't like John Howard. People seem to love finding things wrong with him. I can't wait to see this country go down the gurgla with a Labor government in power.

I couldn't care less about Howard as Treasurer. All that matters is that his government hasn't been in debt while he was in power. He's running for PM, not for treasurer. If you want to look at the past, let's look at how Rudd was a snotty pervert at a Strip Club in another country. If you want to believe that Rudd will do all of these things, like broadband fixing and money towards the environment etc., be prepared for another Keathen-esque term of power. The fact that he is taking even a little bit of advice from probably one of our worst PM's in the past 30 years is less than encouraging.

If you aren't basing your assumptions of a labor governments economic prowess on past figures ... what are you basing it on?.

That is a bit rough on Keating, he had some good ideas that weren't popularly supported. If he had of achieved his goal of implementing a GST then there would be no legal basis preventing the states from taxing goods (Ha v New South Wales (1997) HCA ... can't remember the rest of the citation off the top of my head). If it were not for him the rights won in Mabo would not have become enshrined in legislation nor would the Sex Discrimination Act Cth provide the level of protection it does today.

I am not basing my views simply on "i don't like Howard". When i vote it's on what they have done, will do and so forth.

You seem to be very upfront about how the New Labour Government will screw it all up and how Keating was the most useless leader in the past 30 years.

Yet you refuse to look at Howard in the past when he was treasurer, or any of his other stuffups.
The party you dislike so much pretty much arn't there anymore.

You have a egotistical PM who thinks he's knows better than anyone else, and has shown that if you don't like it... i'll do it anyway, meanwhile you have the treasurer behind him trying to cut his throat so to speak. If you want to talk about a party that is in disolution, have a look in your own backyard before you tell next door what to do.

rofl, yeah. Not a union member but, not even really a labor supporter. I just dislike the attitude that is so popular at the moment. The whole

It doesn't achieve much, I could just as easily defend Howard, after all he did implement the GST which is the only reason the state governments are still viable political entities. I do not agree with work choices, and it is quite obvious that Howard has set it up so that anything that happens will be blamed on the courts, tactically brilliant move but I dislike it. I may not agree with having invaded Iraq I like the fact that we havn't brought our troops home. We are there, we chose to step in and now we have to deal with that come hell or high water.

I disagree with both major parties on nuclear power as I believe it is the only viable option we have.

I just chose to take the Rudd side because unless something quite dramatic happens I will be voting for him and as I said the whole "He will be bad because labor are bad" argument is more than a little bit flawed.

btw I am simply a bored student employed with a piss poor job so I can pay back my HECS.

Totally fair enough Pleo... What you posted before just tended to say to me that you know a lot about the Labor party but after your last post it shows you know a lot about the whole political side of things. Me, I don't, but I can still understand your last post.

The gay part, yeah Howard is too old etc.... Stupid. Rudd went to a stripper bar, stupid. Certain things will get to different people. Like the "no sex before marriage" churchies, that might have an impact on Rudd and the first time voters being 18, the fact that Howard is old, it might have an impact on them to. Even though Costello is only 1 month older than Rudd, that doesn't always enter peoples minds. Why don't liberal get Costello talking now?

I don't agree with work choices either however I know for myself if I don't like what is going on then I can move on because I know I am good enough to get a job somewhere else however I don't have a family to support either.

Totally agree with you there on the Iraq thing.

I have not voted ever. I did get a notice that I should enroll after I got my passport renewed however I still haven't and I won't bother. I don't get it really, we are meant to be a democracy and yet I "have" to vote. Maybe you can enlighten me on this part.

I think Labor will win this one but I still think it will be a bit tighter than what people may think.

MugaHay: If there was no compulsory voting then we would end up like the US where you lose all but the most basic appearance of representation. When only 3% of the population vote how can a government claim to represent a nation? Compulsory voting is a good way to avoid that, also the fine is not that large for not voting, or you could pull a donkey vote and that way you have been marked on the electoral role and so won't be fined.

Their policy states that they believe it may be necessary to develop nuclear power stations (as I understand it). I would invest into the development of those stations now, I would also not invest into the implementation of solar power generation (simply not ready for a mass roll out due to its poor efficieny), but rather invest into R&D to develop it to a point where it can be used as an alternative. Windfarms would have to be too location specific or else a waste of money. Geothermal is a good idea but I don't know much about implementation costs/benefits, etc.

If you want to learn about politics, forget political science and do a law degree
