If your going to have a go about interest rates get them right.
They highest they ever got was 13.5%

I'll try to say it again a Government has very little to do with the interest rates it's a world market.

The banks have already stated that they will be putting up the interest rates 3 times by May 2008. Costello even said that there is no reason to put them up (which there arn't) but the banks are basing it on the market in the US and UK which is where they get their money from.

So again a Government has little to say and can do nothing about it. You can't say it is a Governments entire fault.

Rudd is a smug media whore who will say absolutely ANYTHING to be popular, it is NOT a good quality for a leader.

As far as i'm concerned the Government should have a massive roll in both those aspects. Australia used to have one of the greatest public health and education systems in the world. Token both parties have done some damage over time but the majority of it being done by the Liberal Government.

By forcing the privatisation of the Health & Education system you eliminate the majority of people from getting the medical attention they need when they need it, and make it so that the already wealthy are the only ones the can afford higher education. Someone should not have to wait anywhere from 1-6 years for elective surgery.

With the RBA yes it is correct, they have no say therefore they can't be blamed, however there are plenty of Howard supporters and Howard himself who quote and claim that Labour is useless due to the interest rates last time they were in power. Can't have it both ways.
And for Howard to claim that it would keep interest rates lower than a Labour Government.... how can you claim that if you have no say in the matter.

I find it funny that speak of Rudd as a media whore, they all are. But one bit of grief i have with your comments are that with that kind of funding Labour will force us back into debt. Yet Howard has boasted almost the same funding and more plus 34 billion worth of tax cuts.

I ask anyone here, the average earner will see between $6-$30 with these tax breaks a week. Would you rather that or no HECS fees, my girlfriend finishes uni in a few weeks and will have just over 50K debt in fees. Decide to go any futher with education (masters of doctorite) add another 100K. When you need that elective surgery and can't wait, pay the $1K-$15K+ for the surgery.

And with the Labour voters on this page with a one lined answer i wouldn't be to rash about their responses, most of the Liberal voters are one lined blameing Labour for high interest rates that you and i both have stated is not a Government issue.

I understand that pleo but the banks are still independant companies. As our inflation stands now there is no reason to raise the interest rates. But the ANZ has stated that they will raise them 3 times by May 2008.

The reason being they are a global business if profits fall somewhere they make it up somewhere else. Hense US & UK market is down our prices go up. The RBA can suggest the banks can do what they want.

Though the banks can do what they want, I simply said that they generally do what they are told. Plus if they raise rates excessively there is nothing to stop the federal govt from providing a legislatory framework and binding all financial insitutions in Australia to a rate similar to that of the RBA. Iirc had a system similar to that back when the Commonwealth Bank was literally the bank of the commonwealth.

There is no hope for Iraq. Forcing democracy on them is just going to lead to more problems, or simply delay the inevitable. That country is in a middle of a civil war and the Western forces currently there are not making anything better. The minute we pull out, everything's going to blow up there. Stay or leave, that part of the world is already doomed. So don't think that we're making much of a difference there. If your arch nemesis suddenly barged into your house and stayed with you for 3 years trying to change everything you do, you'd be pretty spiteful against him too wouldn't you?

As for why the general Australian public want to Boot Howard out is because he's old and doesnt have a vision for Australia, he's still living the past and doesnt offer any fresh ideas

Sure the economy is great(thx to costello) but how does it benefit the average Aussie family? Howard said he would keep interest low from the last election and it has gone up 5 time since. He lied again. He tells us it was 17% under labor. even though it was even higher at 22% when he was the treasurer himself.

But due to the variance in the economic managment policies between the two parties he would probably be right by saying that.

That said, I have voted Liberal in the past, but don't think I will this time around.

To tell you the truth, I don't want to vote for either of them. The mere fact that both parties seem all too willing to part with the countrys' tax money to buy themselves into power shows a lack of integrity and genuine interest in the overall well being of the nation. But...what do we do?

For me, the denial of a housing affordibility crisis on Howards behalf and the lack of support for the health & education systems were the tipping point.

In an ideal world, or even an ideal country, we wouldn't be over there, but most of these people have families back home.
It's quite obvious that the Greens will not be in power by the end of this campaign, so my vote is going towards Rudd for his stand to reduce the masses of Aussie troops over in the Middle East.
