Miyamoto Talks Galaxy 2 Story and New Zelda with Wii MotionPlus
Nintendo game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, has gone on record saying he wants Super Mario Galaxy 2 to have as little story as possible. He also wants the new Wii Zelda, which is yet to really be announced, to require Wii MotionPlus.
In an interview with Wired Miyamoto was asked about the story in the original Galaxy and asked if we would see something similar in the sequel. "I’ve talked to (Galaxy director Yoshiaki) Koizumi about that a lot, but this time I’d like to go with as little story as possible. I’ve always felt that the Mario games themselves aren’t particularly suited to having a very heavy story, whereas the Zelda series is something that lends itself more naturally to that idea. We’ve differentiated a little bit between those two, because the Zelda games have had an in-depth story whereas the Mario games have not. Mr. Koizumi is the type of person who, whenever we’re working on a new Mario game, he always wants to bring more story elements into it, as he did with Super Mario Galaxy. But in talking with him this time, he agrees and feels that with Galaxy 2, there won’t be a need for as deep of a story," he replied.
He was also questioned on the use of Wii MotionPlus in the new Zelda title that was confirmed to be in development at E3. One of the few things that Miyamoto said about the game was that he was unsure if it would use Wii MotionPlus or not. The reasoning for this comes down to not wanting to offer a control option for both MotionPlus and the normal Wii Remote. Nintendo don't want to exclude gamers who choose not upgrade their controller, but at the same time want to make use of the better technology.
"Of course [it limits us by trying to cater for two different control schemes], we don’t yet know how things are going to go. We’re doing our best with what we’ve created with Wii Sports Resort. We feel confident that it’s a strong product and that it will help to really drive the install base of Wii Motion Plus. Hopefully with something like Wii Sports Resort, people will feel like they want to have two Wii MotionPlus units in the house to be able to play that game. But the goal at this point is that we would make Wii MotionPlus required in order to play Zelda."
