The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) have granted Sega's Mad World an "18" rating as it contains "very strong, stylized, bloody violence." Sega had been working closely with the BBFC and the United States' ESRB to ensure the game would be eligible for sale in the regions. They asked for feedback at various sages of development to identify what would need to be changed to avoid the game being 'unclassified' in Britain and receiving an "Adults Only (AO)" rating in the US.
At this stage it is not clear if the game has been submitted to the OFLC, Australia's classification body, ahead of it's March release. However if the game received an '18' in Britain the chances of it being refused classification and effectively banned in Australia are high. Australia does not have an R18+ rating for videogames, resulting in anything being deemed unacceptable for an MA15+ rating being refused classification and banned from sale in Australia. To top this off the OFLC have a reputation for being very conservative with videogames, it looks as if Sega may have to make some changes if they plan to have Mad World on Aussie store shelves.
Update! The OFLC have granted Mad World an MA15+ rating for it's Australian release.
