Need for Speed: Carbon - 7/10
I was a big fan of the Need for Speed games on GameCube (and Xbox), owning them all and completing them. So I pick up this game just as my Xbox is finishing its life and didn't play it much.
When Wii came around, I thought I needed a racing game, and I picked it up. Let me tell you, I had a ball with this game. The mechanic is the same as all the other NFS games, meaning unrealistically fun. And now for the review:
Grahpics:
I did a side by side comparison with the original xbox. The Wii passes the test here, looking amazing compared to the xbox, and when I rented it on 360, I was shocked top find the only difference is that 360 supports 8 cars (not 4 like the Wii) and picture-in-picture mode, and HD video, meaning that the wii looks almost as good.
Controls:
They’re fun, honest! Start with the slower, tuner cars and keep going. It didn’t take me or my family members long to get an idea of how to control the cars well.
Unfortunately there is nowhere near enough control as a regular control pad, so if you have another system (like I do), it will be better to control the cars on that.
I mainly used the default control style, you can even use the wii remote and the nunchuk in each hand like a steering wheel, but I prefer control style 1.
Sound:
Tuner cars sound exactly like NFS:U.
Exotic cars sound exactly like NFS:MW
Muscle cars sound exactly like…. hmm this is the first game with muscle cars, we’ll hear them again.
Car sounds are excellent. Tyre squeal is not so great, as you hear it way too often.
Music is an ok choice, but I prefer to turn it off and play my own iTunes.
Story:
Now this game has the worst story of any racing game. Every time you complete a stage, you receive a piece of the story, putting together the puzzle that unfolded since the last game. WHO CARES??? I just skip as much of the FMV as I can as you don’t need a story in these games! I don’t care who framed who, I just want to kick his ass in my GTR.
On the whole, an excellent racing game if you don’t have any other games on your wii and you’re desperate for a racing one.
That said, I am selling this since I have it on 360 now…
