MB0742 said: So yeah I think we can all agree: pcs are future proof as long as they are running Linux.

haha, no, I'm not agreeing with that at all :^)

Why is Linux the future? You can run you linux proggies and some windows ones through crossover or virtual PC or whatever.

On my mac, I can run Windows, Mac and Linux programs all side by side, at the same time, and copy and paste between all of them? You can't do that on any other OS/Platform.

Mac is the future (for now).

Um, unless the vmware website lies, it doesn't let you run OSX in a vmware virtual machine.

haha, I used to run Linux on my old powerbook, but got jack of it because things didn't 'just work' as it should do on a Mac.

I would consider running some of the KDE apps on my Mac though! :^)

That still didn't say you could run apps from all 3 OS's on linux though, with or without VMWare. So far, you can only do that on OSX. :^)

ROFL now THOSE are funny

Who can hate Linux though? I haven't put it on my new computer. I have an XP partition but I haven't used that since installing XP on it so maybe I should put Linux on it... pretty new to dual booting though

haha. well, so far to date, I haven't yet come across anything that didn't work on OSX for me. That's not to say it doesn't happen, but for me, everything I've connected to my Mac has 'just worked'. Digital Camera's, Digital Video Camera's, PSP's, Printers, Scanners... so far, it's all worked like a dream. Maybe it's because I don't buy the cheapest equipment money can buy, and I check things out before I do buy them. But as I said, so far everything has worked without any issues at all.

You cant install Mac OS on a PC because apple doesn't allow it. If they did it would work fine. I know people have got around to hacking OS X so the part of OS X that detects that its running on apple hardware is disabled and it installs fine on a PC.

What he was saying is that you can run VMware on linux, but that still doesn't give you the same functionality as OSX where you CAN run all of these side by side.

yes, but apple does not allow os x to be run on non-apple hardware, microsoft could do the same with windows and not allow it to be run on apple hardware.

That is the only reason Microsoft is on top of the market. If they didn't allow the clone outbreak, Apple would have toppled IBM+Microsoft long ago.

What's worse is they 'illegally' forced their software onto manufacturers.

I agree totally with Silence's comments... given a level, fair, playing field, MS's domination would not be the same it is today.

Talked to my cousin today, in IT, designs and builds PC's, smart guy.

Told me he prefers a PC to a Mac, because it's just so much easier to do with it what he wants, but he also said you will not find a single person who knows something about computers that doesn't hate microsoft with a passion.

I develop web applications in my free time with PHP and SQL, as well as structural languages like (X)HTML and whatnot. I have rudimentary knowledge of C++ and an obscure game language called Inform. I'm a big PC gamer. Formatting my computer is a hobby. I poke around in the registry. I'd say that I reasonably know my way around computers.

But I don't hate Microsoft, I'm simply ambivalent towards them. Where Microsoft has its software shortcomings (none of which has ever majorly bothered me), Apple has its marketing half-truths and software over-engineering (see iTunes+iPod interdependency), and neither are easy for me to swallow.

Microsoft dictate, everyone just knows windows, so that's what they buy. You look at dell, people would just buy a computer and see the windows logo and buy it even if it's crappy old vista home basic.

A few years ago I bought a computer from some guy, and I asked for Windows 98SE instead of Windows XP. He laughed at me.

I think now that he is the one who didn't know what he was talking about.

I have been in the IT industry for over 30 years. Used to have my own chain of computer stores.

I used to love selling Macs which made up about 10% of my total computer sales. They were, and are, high quality machines.

But they aren't, and never will be, better than a IBM PC based Personal Computer. Not if the criteria are:

a) Price
b) Choice
c) Software Catalog

The perpetual myth that Macs and their operating systems are somehow safer then Windows is the biggest con job ever.

The fact is, if a hacker is going to spend time writing a worm or virus, does he/she want to concentrate on the 95% of IBM based PCs or the Macs? Of course they are going to target the biggest, but not necessarily the easiest to infiltrate, user base.

There are serious flaws found in Mac security on a regular basis but nobody bothers to exploit them and the average user isn't going to be receiving the security bulletins or read the relevant website that those who work in IT do.

Windows Vista is nice, but slow. Windows XP is basic, but fast. The Mac operating systems are pretty but lack the same depth of software and choice the Windows user has.
