MarkCDodd said: I have been in the IT industry for over 30 years. Used to have my own chain of computer stores.

I used to love selling Macs which made up about 10% of my total computer sales. They were, and are, high quality machines.

But they aren't, and never will be, better than a IBM PC based Personal Computer. Not if the criteria are:

a) Price

b) Choice

c) Software Catalog

The perpetual myth that Macs and their operating systems are somehow safer then Windows is the biggest con job ever.

The fact is, if a hacker is going to spend time writing a worm or virus, does he/she want to concentrate on the 95% of IBM based PCs or the Macs? Of course they are going to target the biggest, but not necessarily the easiest to infiltrate, user base.

There are serious flaws found in Mac security on a regular basis but nobody bothers to exploit them and the average user isn't going to be receiving the security bulletins or read the relevant website that those who work in IT do.

Windows Vista is nice, but slow. Windows XP is basic, but fast. The Mac operating systems are pretty but lack the same depth of software and choice the Windows user has.

Thats not true. Heaps of people have macs now and 'how many people have macs' does not justify how many viruses windows computers have and how little macs have. Its just not very logical.

I look at my school, and my friends.

Out of the 500 computers at school, i think only 30 are macs, and that's a multimedia classroom that runs ONLY mac programs. Maybe an iMac here that is only ever used as windows.

No friends of mine have one except one whos dad teaches that multimedia thing.

I've never seen one mac user in my life that i know in person,.

to contrast. our entire school admin use macs
ALL of em! everything is run by them lol. and about 60-70% of teachers use macbooks or MBP.
I dont remember why, but i was talking to my friend down the street (he's like 40-45) who is a LINUX nuthead...he like knows tonnes on it and does all his work off it and works WITH linux and w/e else...
and he explained the the level of security on the mac is higher than on windows (yet lower than linux)....
ill have to chase him up and ask him why again!

They are much safer, Mac's that is, I have had Mac's for 3 years and never had a virus. I do a lot of research with my work too and still nothing.

My dad does a lot of IT work for Mac's, Windows and Linux, and he still swears by Mac's, and he is better at explaining why they are safer.

There are a lot less Mac's than Windows comps, so not many viruses are made to target Mac's, but they are made completely different which also makes them safer.

As for the new MacBook Air's, I have a MacBook, and was really looking forward to the new MacBook as I like to upgrade every year but I'm disappointed in the latest one.

There is a joke about the ad, lol, that the MacBook Air is so useless you may as well send the whole comp rather than a piece of paper.

IT DOESN'T COME WITH A CD/DVD ROM!

But you can buy one separate, which defeats the whole idea of it being so light because it makes it weigh the same as my MacBook.

Anyway, I was just hoping for some big improvement, something new, but it's basically the laptop I have without a CD ROM and lighter... with less room. And it cost the same amount too.

I don't agree with what MarkCDodd said at all.
Sure if you were eager enough you could get into a Mac, but because hardly anyone actually does that (why would they when they can target a lot more through Microsoft?) the chances are a lot less. I used to get viruses constantly before I used Mac's. You do the math.

PCs are just as good if you know how to use them. I hardly ever have to restart my PC, and it only ever crashes if I overclock. All this nonsense of PCs being unstable, is just noobs complaining about their inability to use a pc properly.

20 Years of building, supporting, and just plain using wouldnt class me as a Noob! Dos, 3.1, 3.11, 95, NT, 98, ME, 2000, XP, XP MCE, Vista..... Been through them all. (Did I forget any??)... For general day to day use I would have more uptime on a mac, and If I pushed it I would think the same!

Okay and another what happens if you dont know how to use? What happens if its just the Noob in the office? Would you prefer a system that is forgiving (mac) or a BSOD?

I don't see how you could have more uptime than me. I only ever restart my pc if I want to. What exactly were you doing on those computers to have less than perfect uptime? In day-to day use, I never have to restart or anything. The only time I'd ever gotten a BSOD was when I installed a dodgy second hand RAM module. And that was not Window's fault.

Actually, screw them both. Linux is the future.

In a networked environment, running day in and day out you will find most problems are fixed with a simple reboot - goodbye uptime.

And for the general user, most of the time if something hangs on my mac, the rest of my system is fine. Gotten away with a crashed up far more times than on windows.
