OK but if I install a wiikey on a wii that was already updated, do I need to be able to run the wiikey setup disk after install? or does it come in a working state?

Well, this morning brings fresh hope.

There are now 4 or 5 different version of the wiikey bootloader kicking about, and I've been playing with 2 of them. Working flawlessly, at this stage!

I think it is safe to say that the initial shock really isn't justified. Nintendo are firing a warning shot across the bows here guys, nothing more, nothing less.

We still know a few things, that keeps the modchip community relatively safe:

1. They don't know the chip is physically installed (and if you know a thing or two about the nature of the bypass/pinout on the PCB, you know they cannot really do much about it)

2. They are detecting for the disc and the method of loader itself. Change the disc, change the loader...and your solution works again .

The ozmodchips guys warnings still stand, in my opinion. Be careful what you do...and just keep an eye on things. I think we are going to be ok, in the end .

Now, after all of this, i'm curious, has anybody here with a modchipped Wii ran another check for an update on their Wii since they updated to 3.0E? As in gone past the modchip warning message...

The mod-chip message is only there to defend from any law suits Nintendo may get if sued from any bricking.

Do you know what data was changed to make this version work?
I have an NTSC Wii
will the PAL version of the wiikey config work on NTSC as well?

It has been reported that if you have OpenWii installed the update will stop all games from loading. Other modchips do not seem to be affected.

I don't know if OpenWii is sold here in Australia.

ahhh thats nothing... i paid double that and waited 6 weeks for a pair of custom designed pumas... cause i design them myself, there can only ever be 1 pair, and to a sneaker freak, thats worth triple what i paid.

Just one thing that came to mind..... in the update 3.0 for the wii... it says...

"IMPORTANT: If you do not want to accept this upgrade, you can shut down your Wii console and cancel the upgrade by holding down the Power Button for four (4) seconds.
If your Wii console has an unauthorized technical modification, this upgrade could cause inoperability of your console"

The disclaimer bricking warning is for future use.
By taking the update, you allow them in the future to brick your modified Wii at any time.
Most likely, this update was only step 1. Proably another update will kick in the real bricking, and you won't have a choice anymore with that one, because you accepted the step 1 update, and know if you have a modded Wii it can now be bricked by an update. Update/bricking may also happen during online gaming.

In Australia its legal to mod ur wii.... so... wouldnt they be breaking the law by briking our modded wii's here LMAO

That message makes no sense...

Once again I laugh at the panic going on here LMAO

Ok. Let us back up a sec. We are definitely conjecturing many things here. I will say this to your thoughts:

1. I don't think an update will ever BRICK the wii with a modchip installed per-se. Why? If you try to block the Wiikey itself, you are blocking the very commands than run through the Wii's MMC/SCSI layer. A firmware can't just say:

"Nah, I will stop functioning Wii's with a modchip in them", because the very definition of functionality requires SCSI commands to work with the chip itself. Blocking these things, will block the very ability of the Wii to read *any* media.

2. As far as online bricking is concerned, I am really going to sit on the fence on this one. I just don't know what will happen there. I conjecture that they WON'T attempt to online-brick, but again, this is only just speculation!

All the same, your opinion is good food for thought, IMHO.

z.

Nintendo can legally void your warranty if you have a modded Wii, or stop you from using new features, ban online play, etc. - but they cannot intentionally brick your Wii and make it inoperable because you have a modchip installed.

The worst they can do is force you to remove the modchip to be able to play again, but they can't destroy the console.
