Wii News \ New Wii Channel: Everybody's Theater Wii

Launching on January 27th 2009 in Japan is the new Wii Channel,Everybody's Theater Wii.

What this channel allows you to do is rent videos for afew days while paying with Wii points. It will cost you 500 wii points to get the actual channel plus the points that you need to rent these videos. By rent we mean that you dont keep them! The cost for renting video's are listed below,

• A single title for two days: 300 Wii Points
• Two titles for three days: 600 Wii Points
• Three titles for five days: 800 Wii Points

When it launches in Japan next month it will start off with 3,000 videos for you to choose from. These span 150 franchises includeing videos from Astro Boy and Transformers. Most of it will be anime but also drama, and educational shows.

Every month they will add an extra 50 videos for you to rent. There is little hope that this channel will make it's way here.

Also, I realise from yours and other peoples comments that you guys might not have access to a credit card. It's a bit more convenient when you don't need to go to a shop to get a Wii Card and then go home to spend the points. I just punch in my number and buy points straight away through the Wii.
BTW the lowest pack of points is 1000. This is 15$.
So yeah I understand your concerns now. Buying a Wii card would be a pain, but thats not an Online Movie Rental problem.
I also agree, you shouldn't have to pay for the channel itself.

but i don't mind buying a channel that offers interesting stuff (for only 500 wii points at that). And i don't mind paying for what you want to buy.
My only problem is that it shouldn't be a rent service, you should KEEP what you payed for.

You are trying to compare the value of video renting with this online service. We don't have enough info to compare the value yet.

300 Points ($4.50au) is the quoted Japanese cost.

We don't yet know if its recent releases or the video quality.

It is fair enough you find 'renting' useless to you. I don't rent often either. I like to own things. But I still like options to be available to me and since we can't really compare the value of online renting through this system compared to your local video store, isn't it just nice knowing you can do it online *if* you wanted?

A similar concept already exists. You go to this store where they give you a movie. But you can only play it for a set amount of time. I don't know how it would work on normal DVD players but I've walked past the store.

The only problem I see is if you normally rip the dvds you rent before you return them.

Sadly I think this luxury will soon fade. Even then I still don't understand what all the fuss is about when the proper and *legal* process is pay, use then return. That's what renting is.

yeah, exactly. Even if yeah, you have to buy the channel for 500 wii points (which is reasonable). And you used your hard-earned points to BUY these videos, so you KEEP them..... Then that would be more of a good deal.

either store them on SD (or if Nintendo had a damn hard-drive).
OR, even if they made it to where if you buy a video, it's ALWAYS available to be streamed on the channel from the purchaser.
