Lag
For best results use a wired connection. Ensure all possible programs such as MSN are closed, and if possible disconnect everything from the modem except the Wii. If you play people while downloading things like music, it will cause noticeable lag and I assure you nobody will want to play you. WA to NZ is the only distance where lag causes the game to become unplayable. For more info check the following thread.

Minimising wireless lag
Make sure that the Wii is not too far from the modem nor too close, as too close can cause lag as well. Any electrical appliances from a blender to a lawn mower can cause noticeable lag on wireless. Otherwise, providing you're on a speed upwards from 1,500 to 20,000 KB, there is little to no difference and only interference in the wireless connection will cause lag.

Tuesday curse
For unknown reasons Tuesdays are known to be the day where Wifi errors are most common. There is no known solution, however persistence usually pays off.

I’m getting flogged! / How do I get better?
It’s common to lose heaps when you start playing Wifi even if you are a pro in real life. Just by playing good people though you will improve noticeably. Turning items off will also help your game come along, and if you want to find articles that’ll help get better visit Smashboards. They have a character section where you can find guides on your characters as well as links to YouTubes of professionals and much more helpful information. It’s not uncommon to be affiliated with this site as well as MyWii.

*** TECHNIQUES

B reversal everyone except Sonic, Zelda, Olimar & Metaknight
Press B to perform a neutral B attack then immediately slam the control stick in the opposite direction you are facing. Your character will do the neutral B attack facing the opposite direction. This can be useful if you are running away and want to shoot a laser at your enemy as you run away.

DAC / DACUS Jigglypuff, Sheik, Link, Wario, Snake, Falco & Wolf
Sliding Usmash. This is done on the GC controller. While running/dashing press down on the C-stick then immediately press up on the control stick and your standard attack button or grab. The timing for this is very precise and it will take practice to be able to incorperate into your gameplay, but this technique is very useful.

Glide Toss Zero Suit Samus, Peach, ROB, Diddy, Wario in particular
Hold L or R and press left or right to roll. While doing so if you press the C stick in any direction while holding an item you will throw that item while rolling. This is useful for Zamus' armour pieces, Peach's turnips, ROB's gyro, Diddy's bananas and Wario's bike parts and can be performed by most other characters.

Edge Popping Most characters but is particularly useful for the following:

Mario, Bowser, Wario, Fox, Link, Toon Link, Ganondorf, Captain Falcon, Samus, Squirtle, Marth)

After using your upB move hold down when near an edge and you will not sweetspot the edge and continue attacking. This is useful for mindgames and with particular attacks like Squirtle's Waterfall & Mario's Coin Punch.
