Mario Party 8 Review - 8/10

The star carnival has come to town! But it wouldn’t be a party without Mario and friends (Do Wario and Waluigi count as friends). So you know the drill: Party hard or risk being a loser. There’s not much to it really. Have turns on a game board rolling dice and playing minigames. Just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it’s not fun. When you beat the star carnival you get a years supply of candy. Candy? How does candy come into this? Well there are candy shops around all the levels. Each candy grants you a power. For example bowlo candy turns you into some kind of beach ball (WTF) so you can make someone lose coins every time you pass them. There are fourteen different candies with four different colours. Wow. That’s a lot of dentist appointments! There are six levels in MP8. That’s not whole lot but they all contain different traps, characters, candies and ways to get stars. And what would a Mario Party game be without new minigames. With over 80 new minigames that take advantage of the motion sensing controls, MP8 is great minigame playing fun. MP8 really doesn’t give you much single player gameplay so it has loads of extras. Minigame tent: A place where you can compete with the minigames you’ve unlocked. The Extras tent is exactly that. A place with extras like Wii Sports-like minigames. After having a party you get carnival cards that you can trade in at the Fun Bazaar for sounds, music, minigames and figures. These add-ons help MP8 last longer but the real way to get the most out of MP8 is to get a few friends over and party it out like its 2000!



Mario Party 8 is definitely not for hardcore gamer (which kind of makes me look stupid!). It’s for getting out when you have a party or someone comes over. A hardcore gamer could still like this, but they’d have to play casually. MP8 has some flaws like a lack of minigames, the lack of levels and the lack of new features. Of course anyone could point out the flaws of a game and not like it. It’s basically what critics do. But that’s the trick to liking a great simplistic game like this. Don’t focus on what’s wrong, focus on how much fun you have when you’re stealing stars from someone or playing a great motion control minigame with three other people. MP8 is the perfect example of simple games being awesome! Any game with Mario in it is a game alright with me!
