Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games - 8/10
Graphics(7)
Obviously graphics are never a strong point in Wii titles, this game is no miraculous exception. Some jaggies are present but are kept to a minimum and the crowds look fairly tacky but do give the game a bit of atmosphere. Table Tennis Dream Event does suffer slightly during multiplayer from frame rate drops, it becomes slightly clunky but still playable. Stadiums look fantastic as does some of the apparatus of events. Overall average graphics, nothing that will ruin the fun.
Sound (7.5)
Some nice menu music, atmospheric sound from crowds and the announcer really make this game solid in the sound department, nothing too breathtaking but presented well creating a decent "experience".
Gameplay (9)
Yes a lot of it is simple waggles, however most events vary in the way the controller is used. For example characters have different swimming strokes, making the original selection really important. This is even better in relays where 4 seperate characters are chosen, tactics are implemented as players try and choose characters which correspond to their favourite style of waggle, while leaving the harder ones for friends. Overall this is the key point of the majority of Wii games and Mario and Sonic will not disappoint.
Replay Value (8.5)
Features such as missions, where you must meet objectives in certain events, Wifi boards and unlockables extend the life of this game significantly. It becomes really exciting giving yourself a place in the PAL region, trying to surpass your friend's. Multiplayer is where the replay value will lie, it is a blast. The only major disapointment is that records cannot be set during multiplayer which really destroys a lot of the competitive edge. A full online mode challenging random people would give this game A list status, something to thing about should a sequel or a similar game be released.
Overall (8)
I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys party games, mini game collections, multiplayer fun. This is NOT for the hardcore fans who expect the most detailed olympics simulator ever made. It is fun, quirky and in its own right a unique game which should stay at the top of your friends "Can i play?" lists for a long time. Give it a go and you will be hooked.
