Paper Mario (VC) - 9/10
ICC wishes he lived in a paper world
Paper Mario, when that was first suggest what the bet that the room filled with laughs? That's the brilliance that is Nintendo, they take one of the worlds best established Video game series and twist it too make it into something completely different and with Paper Mario it's worked a charm.
Paper Mario first came out on the N64 in 2001 but due to it being so close to the end of the Nintendo 64's lifespan many of us missed out. Thanks to the new generation of the Virtual Console this much loved game is now available to everyone who missed out the first time and those who want to relive the magic.
Story: 7/10 Paper Mario follows the main man's roots as once again he sets out to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of her pure evil kidnapper Bowser. Unfortunately for the portly plumber Bowser has acquired himself some extra strength through the use of the ever powerful star rod. Bowser being undeserving never had his wishes granted so he took the star rod so he could grant his own wishes and imprisoned the 7 star spirits. Mario must now free the star spirits and get the star rod back form bowser to defeat him and save the princess.
Gameplay: 10/10 Anyone who has played the sequels (particular the thousand year door) will be familiar with the gameplay. Paper Mario sees Mario back in the RPG arena as he improves his own abilities and joins up with new partners each with their own abilities. Turned based battles are faught between Mario and one of his partners against various enemies earning Mario exp points leveling him up and the player can choose which ability they want to upgrade. This is Mario at his best and possibly one of the greatest RPG's on the N64.
Graphics 8/10: The graphics are kept simple with the theme as everything is meant to be made of paper and are what give the game its charm. Compared to the newer games in the series the 2001 graphics look pixelated in areas but they do make the game what it is. Even though they can appear pixelated around some of the characters These graphics were great in their day and still do the job of representing Mario in paper form today.
Controls: The Nintendo 64 controls work well with both the classic controller or the gamecube controller and can be easily picked up due to the simple nature of the button presses.
Overall Paper Mario is well worth the 1000 points or $15 that it costs to pick up and is close to if not the best VC game that Nintendo have given us so far.
