News \ Nintendo Looking Into Holographic Storage Solutions, That Could Prove Revolutionary.

It seems that InPhase Technologies and Nintendo might be working on something known as Holographic Data Storage, which is recording data to a disk.

A patent that was made earlier in the year has the following paragraph in it:

"... disclosure is herein made that the claimed invention was made pursuant to a Joint Research Agreement as defined in 35 U.S.C. 103 (c)(3), that was in effect on or before the date the claimed invention was made, and as a result of activities undertaken within the scope of the Joint Research Agreement, by or on the behalf of Nintendo Co., and InPhase Technologies, Inc."

Though it does not say anything about Holographic Storage it does say Joint Research Agreement which means “… a written contract, grant, or cooperative agreement entered into by two or more persons or entities for the performance of experimental, developmental, or research work in the field of the claimed invention.”

And if one were to venture over to the InPhase Technologies website, found here www.inphase-tech.com/ , you would find they specialise in Holographic Data Storage.

But how would this be capable in the Nintendo Wii? Well Nintendo would need to put a new disk drive in to the Wii or they might come up with something better.

Could this open up a whole new chapter in Video Game Storage Solutions?

Guess we will have to wait to find out and see.

It could be holographic discs for game distribution, not necessarily hard drive storage. This tech has been around for years. I remember there was a company ages ago developing CDs that could hold something like 20-100 gig.

If they did that, then the games that you rent at Blockbuster or other places would already have memory in them, making things a lot easier for lazy gamers.

Kabmoon said: Well, if it's the same idea as the holographic storage that was talked about in the past, it would be a simple USB removable drive, with approximately 1" (2.54cm) cubes, instead of disks, each of those cubes were estimated, now keep in mind this was a few years ago when people like MIT were experimenting with it, those cubes were estimated at 1tb (yes one terabyte) of storage per cube. If they go anywhere NEAR that amount, and Ninty gets this rolling, they could make a KILLING if they make them compatible with PCs as well.

If Nintendo were to do the 1 Terabyte storage then they would charge more for it since they usually charge you quite a bit for the Storage, like how Sony charges you at different prices for different PS3 storage sizes.

But it would be good to have a 1 terabyte HD
