What?

You started off by saying they did it for the good of users.

You moved on to say it was a requirment for the Wii to function.

You then moved on to say Nintendo was permitted to do what they like.

You then finished by saying they're not actually forcing you to update you just can't play games if you don't.

By God you're right!!

You haven't changed you opinion at all.

A great counter-point.

But here's the catch. Anti-piracy has gone through huge steps; in the early days you had to enter the 14th word on page 7 of the manual. Then they had a little story booklet or map, and you were asked to answer questions about it. Then they gave you a code wheel to consult during certain points of the game. Now we've gone from CD keys to invasive rootkit DRM measures and even per-use registration, as Valve does with the games you download from Steam. What's next, will we pay a small fee every time we start the game, accessing a central server every time to make sure we're running a legitimate copy, and therefore requiring us to have an internet connection whenever we want to play?

While these are so far PC-specific examples, what I am trying to say is that any attempt to curtail piracy by software patching is ultimately futile. All things can be bypassed. Instead, it should be made more attractive to buy a game at retail, and correspondingly cheaper to buy a game via digital distribution. Collectors' Edition releases should be the norm; cloth maps, collectible miniatures, lunch boxes, fuzzy dice.

Piracy is not legal, but ownership of a modchip is. An Australian judge found that modchips did not breach copyright circumvention laws, and that they allowed legal activities like playing imported games.

To some extent I agree. I think most of us have had frustration with activating legal versions of Windows simply because we upgraded our computer.

However this is just a system update that does no harm to anybody except those who have modified their wii illegally.

So while I agree with your arguement, I dont think in this instance the line has been crossed.

I have been reading very carefully. You don't make sense.
Nintendo don't release firmware updates to help gamers.
No they do it for profit. All games companies do.
Some just look after gamers more then others.
This is one area where Nintendo fall down.
The choice to use there product is the only choice you get.
This is what crippled the GC. I'm sure you're aware of that.
By law Nintendo has no right to alter your system without your approval which technically means updates on games that don't let you deny the change are illegal in Australia.
Wow.
Another one of those things that you just have to know and understand that you can't BS your way out of afterwards.

Piracy is not legal, but ownership of a modchip is under Australian law. They are legal because it is not illegal to play imported legitimate games or homebrew.

greenbob , desi has made my point clear, I NEVER meantioned piracy, I said modifications to the console.

i really don't care what nintendo do. i have connect24 and the internet turned off. I don't harldy play any wii games on it anymore. I use it soley for homebrew at the moment and i really can't see that changing. oh btw brawl is already stamped and distributed so the update doesn't come into affect for this game. i've had brawl for ages anyway. i have mario kart and i have indy jones. so essentially i am done with this console for the time being. this may change, but most likely not.

anyway back to the last ninja for me

Hehe yeah. Infocom's Wishbringer had a little plastic rock, and that was both copy protection and the start of the game (imagine, the game beginning before you started it up?)

Ultima VII was the map questions. Where is blah blah, in latitude and longtitude?

I dont know if Nintendo are trying to block the pirated games, mod chips or both.

I also dont want to be drawn into a debate about whether or not we should have region specific games because my answer is 'no but we do so deal with it' and then insert me being flamed.

A car is a car. A house is a house. But Nintendo are not just selling a console - but also games.

Yes, by all means modify your console like you would your car. It is legal and you are within your rights to do so.

But Nintendo are also within their rights to change the software on their system and to update it. As said before - you dont have to update your system. Nothing is forced. They arent sending out armed guards to everybody's house. It just means you cant play the latest games.

Your rights. Their rights.

Oh and Desi - good arguements mate. But I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

I think you should all quit your goddamn whining and let Nintendo disable whatever **illegal** or unofficial things it wants.

Wii Homebrew is USELESS anyways. After having tried it myself (my god, how many different threads have I had to say this in?), I've found homebrew on the Wii to be, well, crap.

Other then homebrew software, there's also emulators being run on the Wii, which is something I greatly frown upon, and I'm damn sure Nintendo does too.

But worst of all is all the f***ing freeloaders. Datel, you are the worst thing to happen... ever! Do you know what the traditional definition of "freeloading" is? I think it suits the gaming version of the term quite well.

Good riddance to the hacks and freeloaders. They deserve to be rendered useless. And only a pre-pubescent child would bitch about something that is illegal in the first place being disabled.
