WORST part of it; VicRoads send around this accompanying letter with ways to 'destroy your old red P-Plates'.

These ways include:

* Putting it into a blender.

* Making a plane out of it and throwing it to your brother.

* Using it as a sail on a boat, and watching it dissapear into the horizon.

* Using it as a dart-board.

* Writing a postcard on it to your gran.

And one more lame lame lame idea.

Oh dear god. It sounds like the bloody Connex ad's. 2 of my friends have theirs I might have mine but I don't know whether its coming to my house or my PO Box and I don't care enough to check.

They may think this will solve things but it won't. If people cannot see this is a social problem not a skill problem they have to open their eyes a bit. The dangerous driving is just showing off, showing off is just a trend that seems to be increasing these days of people feeling the need to prove themselves. The alcopops law is exactly the same thing - they're going the only way they know how around a problem they don't understand. I have no idea either how it can be fixed but this is probably not going to work. I got nowhere near 120 hours before I got my license, and I got a manual license even though the only manual I'd ever driven was on my driving lessons. Thats just how easy it is to learn how to drive a car. (epic ramblings cont...)

But driving on a road with other cars is a completely different story, you only really learn how to do that when you're on your own. I've had so many near misses, thankfully none of them were my fault, but they really knock some sense into...well not me but anyone with a regard for their life. I've had 3 trucks try and merge straight into me when I've been in their left blindspot; and being that my father drives one I am a lot more aware of them than most people - it only takes seconds. I've had someone try to change into...well me...on the Eastern Freeway doing 100kmph. All sorts of things come up and its all up to how you react, you cannot be taught that - you learn.

My driving instructor constantly covered the mirror and then asked me the colour of the car behind me to show me the importance of knowing whats around you, I pretty much never knew. Now if he asked me I could tell him the car the model and how fast they were going in relation to me and thats just something I learned having driven on my own. When you're out of your protective bubble you really learn whats what

Normally, I give that a big normally however. Truck drivers are usually very good drivers, it tends to be the car drivers that don't take the notice they should. This is also something I was not taught when getting my licence, to look out for trucks that can't really see a lot. I haven't had an incident like the above but with experience I know what to look for.

Truck drivers...at least the ones driving something other than those little rent a box piles, are generally extremely capable, their day to day job requires reversing and parking jobs that would make most of us soil our jeans, they are very conscious of the size of their trucks but unfortunately they have massive blind spots. Driving on their left side is extremely dangerous but sometimes thats how the cookie crumbles and I've been stuck in that situation a couple of times now

I didn't get my L's for quite a while after my birthday, so I have to use green P's for a while. Green P's are for people who are still on their p's after 21, I think.

And it gives me a reason as to why I can't take all my drunk mates home.

And about truck drivers, the majority (or atleast the majority of the ones that I've met -- I work in warehousing) are very good drivers, but then again, this doesn't mean there aren't some terriable ones. A word of warning though from what they've told me, it takes a semi-trailer truck atleast 1km to come to a complete stop, even more if it's got a full load on. So never try overtake a truck right before lights, 'coz you're asking for it

well a person with not much experiance would have alot of trouble concentrating on driving with a car load of drunk mates .
this is one example , your driving all your drunk mates home after clubbing all talking about a great night .
MATES :"did you see that chick, bla bal bla, eww im gunna spew"

DRIVER : "dont spew in the car"*looks around to back seat to see mate spewing , runs red light crash'es kills all mates and other people in car they crashed into*

just a funny little scenario to show why the laws are in place not that it would happen

Re post by stygiaN on trucks
Good point re trucks stopping. My partner drives a B-Double, full laden that's 60 tonne moving on a hway average speed 99 klms.
Most truck drivers are pretty good, there are a few cowboys around. Most trucks that are involved in accidents have been trying to avoid an idiot car driver and place themselves in danger of dying by avoiding killing the idiot!

that is complete crap most are due to the drugs they take hrs they stay awake and the speed they drive.most accedents involving truck there is nobody else involved
im not saying they all drive on drugs or speed but alot do and have to to deliver their goods on time , ive seen so many trucks break laws its not funny, but ive also seen many car break laws as well.

edit : ignore all ive just said i checked some facts and it appears i am totally wrong when it comes to fatal accidents. i apologise for my ignorance

Speed? A semi-trailer / B-double cannot go over 103 or 113kph, can't remember which, and a bus cannot go over 100kph, and all of these drivers know exactly how much time and distance it will take for them to come to a complete stop.

Sure, at this speed it becomes a driving bomb, if it hits anything, you're toast. But regardless. If I drive 113kph in a car and hit you you're still dead.

Edit: No worries, no need to apologize either. Just a discussion.

Gee leeman34, sorry mate, but have been around trucks and truck driving all my life and know the score.
There have been times that drivers have done the wrong thing and have paid with their lives. I agree with the deliver the goods on time, consumers are to blame for tight dead lines.
But sorry to disappoint you "NOT ALL TRUCK DRIVERS TAKE DRUGS" and most trucks are speed-limited so can only go over 100kms going down hill or after a down hill! A few cowboys do disable the speed limitors!
and CARS DO CAUSE TRUCKS TO CRASH!

most trucks have speed limiters but they can be switched off and driven at whatever speed the truck can do.

and from my previous post .
