I've read that some of the ppl out there that write mods for the Wii have gotten it to a level where it can almost fully read DVD movies/menus/subtitles etc. If they've managed to do that without hardware adjustment (IF!!! and as long as the only adjustment has been the mod chip or whatever) then there might be hope that it can be enabled with a Shop Download..

Actually, I change my mind. I wouldn't mind having a dvd player in the Wii, since it would be good when going on holidays to have my own dvd player, as well as the Wii

I heard that there was apparently a new model of Wii being released in Japan that would support playing DVD's (much like the Panasonic Q for Gamecube).

I don't know how this will work since Nintendo bailed out of Dolby Digital (For surround sound) and just opted for the Dolby Pro Logic (For emulated surround sound) with the Wii.

BR might be the future... in a long time. If i wont loto i would not buy a BR. $40 for BR movie where i can get the same on DVD for $10. The difference? DVD's look good enough for me. But it's the same when DVD's first came out, $40 per dvd blah blah blah. Time will tell

Well I have a cheapo TV for example with only one set of component inputs, and that's taken up by my regular DVD player, so if I could use the Wii as a DVD player than I could get the cables for that, of course if I get a new TV I'm sure it would have more than one set of inputs So at least with the Wii being used as a DVD player that's one less set of cables to worry about.

I certainly wouldn't pay for an add-on attachment, I like the slim design of the Wii. If they keep bringing out all these new things to add on to it, it will just end up a jumbled mess of boxes. I would be quite happy to have a hard drive add-on, but it really isn't worth it just to play DVDs.

During Nintendo's E3 2005 press conference, Nintendo announced new details regarding ports and peripherals used on the Nintendo Revolution. On every Nintendo Revolution includes two standard USB ports, compatability with completely wireless controllers, and a single proprietary output for video and audio. Already known is a dongle enabling DVD playback will plug into the front. An additional add-on must be purchased to play DVD format discs.
