“The next wii and xbox updates will make all mod chip consoles obsolete” True or False!!!

I hear a rumor today which I found most troubling. The next patch will render the console useless, in other words turn your console in to a nice door weight.

Remember this is just a rumor I hear. Has anyone else hear this, or better still confirm or disprove this rumor.

Personally I hope this is wrong, I was hoping to import some American games soon.

The only thing I have heard that is anywhere close to what you are saying is that you will be banned from XBox live if you're Xbox has been modded. Apparantly, they can detect if it has been modded, you will see an error code and then you will be banned!

I have heard nothing in relation to the Wii though, but I doubt very much if they could update your system so that it was rendered useless if it is modded. Where are the smart people on here to tell us why this won't/can't happen???

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. But I guess that they're not making the consoles useless, or harming them in any way (Xbox I mean). I suppose they can do what ever they want with LIVE, it would be their right.

An Xbox update can overwrite the homebrew software (that launches the games) that is installed on a modified xbox. This can potentially render your Xbox useless unless you have a boot disc to reinstall this homebrew software.

Without this homebrew software launcher (called a Dash) the default Microsoft Dash that comes with the update will detect the mod chip and stop normal operation.

** correction
The update will not detect a chip that is in stealth however most modded xboxes have an upgraded hard drive... which the chip detects and then stops normal operation because the console has been tampered with. This is easily fixed with the boot disc with the homebrew dash.

MS can do this cause the chip changes the firmware of the consoles drive, the wii chips do not.

Okay. Let's clear this up.

Xbox 360s are being banned from Xbox Live because to get it to run unsigned software, you must update the 360's firmware with custom drivers. Verifying if a console's software has been modified, then, is a simple matter of running an MD5 (or checksum, or whatever function Microsoft likes) on the driver contents.

A WiiKey does not edit Wii firmware.

Dumbest 'rumor' I've heard all month.

Stealth mode on the wiikey means that you can't get a signal back from the modchip at all. Thats why when you insert the config disk it will always say "region override: off", even when you have turned it on.
Now there is always a very very small chance Nintendo could detect the modchip. I guess they could emulate a 'non-licensed' disk and see if the DVD drive reads it.
I high doubt this will happen, and even if it does, we are talking about Nintendo here.

Nintendo have always been the most paranoid of piracy. They stuck with catridges on N64 purely because of piracy. Then they moved to proprietry mini-dvd's on the Cube because of piracy. Now that they have games on DVD disks, sending out an update to brick all chipped Wii's wouldn't surprise me and i would applaud them. More than likely though, if they can detect Wiikey, they might do something more sinister, like shut-down the wireless internet connection the Wii has, that would be excellent. I have always been so heavily againsy piracy that IMO, having a chipped console for any reason is unacceptable. If you want to play a game from another region, do it the old fashioned way....BE PATIENT
