The Nintendo Wii is on the cusp of reaching sales of over 4 million units worldwide. The console has exceeded expecations, having set the record for a console in its week of launch. A quick perusal of the interwebs has shown that the console is in hot demand, with stores in Europe, North America, Japan and Australia, unable to keep consoles in stock, with pre-ordered sales being the only way budding gamers can get their hands on the new system.

Multiple threads for single topics seems to be the running theme for this forum.

Anyhoo, that site updated very frequently throughout the day, It will be interesting to see if it tips 4 mill within the next week.

I think that 53.2 % is the result of a poll that was set up on the site prior to the US launch of the PS3 and the Wii. I don't think that number had changed in a while....

I could be wrong but i can't see wii catching 360. I think the big reason a wii is selling so well is because of the cheaper price point and the fact it's bundled with a game and ready to play straight out of the box.

I dare say the 360 will be due for another price drop soon especially in regions where the PS3 hasn't been released to punt a dent in Sony's sales. Don't get me wrong, i think the wii will continue to sell very well and will take second spot quite comfortably. But i just think with the big lead XBOX has and it'll continue to become much more affordable (especially when they start bringing out bundles themselves) that the 360 will win out in the end no problem.

For many, the Wii may well be the "second console" alongside their X360 or PS3.

And I don't think anyone will be too surprised if there is a pricedrop or an attractive bundle package made available for the 360 ahead of the PS3's launch in March. It's still less than 12 months since the 360 launched in Aus but we are yet to see a substantial price drop (aside from the mega-entertainment package that was out a little while back).

I know the 360 has been out longer than wii which obviously that makes such a big difference to the sales figures, but realistically the wii will have to sell several units more compared to each 360 to gain the type of ground needed to catch them. While that might happen in the short term because the wii is so new, it'll wear off eventually and i think you'll find as i said before that the 360 will win out in the end.

Personally i don't care as i love both consoles and whatever happens, Nintendo have done a remarkable job to fight their way back in the console battle after lagging so far behind with the last gen machines.

Well you maybe right, but the Wii will continue to sell, because of the amount of updates it is having, with the increasing VC the soon to come online service and the promising titles to be released this year. It will continue its amazing run, but before you assume 360 is safe you should be aware that the Wii has sold nearly half what the 360 has sold in total.

As i stated in my previous post, the wii will continue to sell very well and i've never doubted that. Another thing i stated as to why i think the wii is selling so well and has sold nearly half that of the 360 is because it sold at half the price as what the xbox did at launch. As mentioned it's a very attractive price point for the many people that couldn't afford to spend as much on the 360. But as the 360 continues to drop as it inevitably will then the sales will go up. It's just the way it works.

I'm not assuming anything either, i'm merely stating my opinion and as i said i could be wrong. One thing, you said that the wii has sold nearly half the amount of the 360, well if you double what the wii has sold and then subtract it from what the XBOX has s

The fact that demand is outstripping supply should also be taken into consideration. It'll be interesting to see what these numbers will look like, once the Wii is readily and widely available in-store.

Coulda shoulda woulda. They could've sold more consoles if they had more consoles, they would've sold more consoles if they had more consoles and they would've sold consoles more if they had more consoles but guess what? They didn't and don't have the consoles and that's Nintendo's problem that they never made enough to meet demand. Yes they would've sold more obviously but you can't add what they would've sold to the sales charts and talk hypotheticals.

This claim that the price is the only reason is all bull to me. I doubt price has that much to do with it. Living here in Australia if you can spare $400 you can spare another $200 to get something you want more. Most people buy what they want, borrow money, save up longer, whatever it takes.

I think when people go to buy one and they see the price it helps, everyone likes a good bargain. But at the end of the day you wouldn't buy it if you didn't want it.

You had two "would've's" and forgot to put in a "should've".

What you said is right, of course, but I think what I was trying to say is that the console will still sell strongly over 2007.

Who claimed that the price is the ONLY reason why it's selling well? If you read my post properly and stop putting words in my mouth you'll see that i said a big reason and also the fact it's bundled with a game and ready to play straight out of the box.

Also where do you get $200 difference? The 360 launched at $650 plus you had to spend $120 for a game which is a total of $770. That's $370 difference from the wii. Now i'm sure everyone would love to live in your world of "If you want it you'll just buy it" but in reality an extra $50 for something is still too much for some people to afford let alone over $300. I'm lucky, i work hard and generally if i want something i can afford to get it but there's many many more around that can't no matter how much they want something.

Well if all i can get picked up on is an error or two in my typing then i'm pretty happy with that. It's hardly relevant to the topic but whatever pleases you.

Once more as i've stated a few times now, the wii will continue to sell very well and i have no doubts at all about that. The only thing i do doubt is it selling the several units more (say 3,4,5 to 1) it needs to sell compared to each xbox to make up the ground it needs to take over. Just because the wii will continue to sell well, doesn't mean the 360 will just go away and not sell well also for the reasons i mentioned earlier.

Anyway we'll have this debate in a years time and things will be much more clearer.

I also doubt that this will happen, and we will likely see the 360 as the PS2 of the current generation. (ie: First to launch, huge software library, biggest seller).

I mean, its not like they're going to unsell any of those 10 million 360's already in people homes.

One thing I like about 360 is there are so many pre-owned games in every game store and the price is very tempting. But anyhow I love Wii's gameplay and the trophy is not too hard to reach for NINTENDO.
