Just wondering, does anyone know if the Gamecube controller can be used instead of the Retro one Nintendo is releasing at launch? I've looked around but info on it is sketchy at best.

So does anyone know? ANYONE?

I'm getting a retro controller as I didn't get a cube (thank god). It also look like it would be more comfortable to hold than the cube controller.

Personally i think the cube controller is extremely comfortable (not as great as the 64 tho), the retro controller looks as though it'll bend my either thumb back too much or i'll have to hold the thing precariously if i want to use the analogs. It lacks those nice little form fitting bits that my PS/gc/64 controllers have for the hands. The positioning of them reminds me of the GC (d-pad and yellow analog) and PS controllers which i have to say were not ergonomic positions, at least for my hands anyway.

You can only play gamecube games with the gamecube controller. U use the retro controller to play virtual console games and Wii games that don't use the Wii mote.

Wavebird works, but not all VC games work with gamecube controllers (so this obviously applies to the wavebird as well)

"You can only play gamecube games with the gamecube controller."
Don't think this is true.
According to this interview: www.computerandvideogames.com/ it says you can use the gamecube controller to play virtual console games, but not all games will work according to the wii manual mywii.com.au/

Unfortunately, it seems you can't use the retro controller for gamecube games.

Also, upcoming wii games may work with the gamecube controller, eg. the director of the upcoming smash bros suggested not to throw your gamecube controller away yet.

I read from an article that the wavebird works fine on the wii, as someone tried to plug it into the wii and they confirm that it fits fine.

Above poster beat me to it

I hope this is true ..... if so the controler would be wireless anyhow cause the retro control plugs into the remote

The Wavebird is so ugly it's about twice the size of a normal cube controller and must feel like literally holding a brick. Is it worth the wireless feature?

This came from milmoe's link, straight from Ninty:

"All virtual console games can be played using the Classic Controller or Nintendo GameCube pads. The Wii Remote can also be turned on its side and used as a traditional controller to play NES games. However, a game will only be playable with the control mechanism it was designed for. So, for example, you will play NES games with the D-pad, not an analogue stick or motion-sensitive functionality. "

So it looks like you don't have to buy a retro controller if you already own a GC one.

Even if they don't release an official bundle like the Wiiplay bundle it would be in the retailers best interests to have some sort of classic controller/wii points or cube controller/wii points bundle.

I dont think the main stores will stock the wii points. As ya can just get them of the Wii anyway. Is it gonna b cheaper to buy the points online??? (through the wii). It shud be it is cheaper for Nintendo, no packageing no delivery. That does work out to be a few cents!!! But thats about 2 more points.

I'd say they wont make it cheaper online but they might offer online packs. Not everyone will find online buying easier i.e me. Just look at the iTunes gift cards, they are EVERYWHERE and you can just as easily buy the songs with a credit card.

I think SSBB wouldn't be such a great game using the Wii-mote so using the cube/retro control would be the best go imo.

Just wait for SSBB to be released, they will surely be stilling it with a retro controller for free or a discounted price. It wouldn't make much sense to sell a game that doesn't use the standard controller and not include it in the initial launch period. E.G Time Crisis 2
