Um..its an alternative operating system to Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X, can run on any PC...it is basically a free OS with no restrictions and very powerful. Unfort in a Windows world no many peeps know how to use it, but it pwns Windows.

you'll be able to download it off the net when its ready. all linux distros are like that.

basically your Wii will become like a PC with this CD (it has internet connection after all).

Ehh I don't like Linux, it's hardly user friendly. You have to know you way around a computer to use it (I do but just to warn beginners)

Windows wouldnt be user friendly either if you did not grow up with using it. Everyone thinks Windows is user friendly only because thats what they are used to.

Mandarin is "user friendly" to people in China as they grew up with it....but they find English hard to learn. Reverse here.

If you put two kids in front of two computers without any previous PC experience they would probably pick up the Linux OS quicker (yes, its more intuitive that Microsoft). Unfort we live in a Windows world where the lesser OS with more money wins. "sigh"

lol yeah almost every Linux OS has a GUI...some are even made to look exactly like Windows (like the "lindows" distro)

WiiLi will 99.9% probably have a GUI

because linux will be able to circumvent any restrictions nintendo have put on the product.
i.e. you wont have to buy virtual console games because you can run an emulator in linux and play the roms.
you will be able to use any internet application you use now on your pc (i.e. instant messengers, torrents, etc.) .. print onto a usb printer .. post to mywii.com.au from your couch with a usb keyboard..
run a webserver off of your wii (lol)
etc.etc.etc.etc.

im sure alot of people would say 'why would you want to do this?'. Good question, most people probably wouldnt.. but if someone is willing to make it possible.. im not sure theres any reason to complain

A lot of hackers ported linux to the x-box so they could have a cheap but powerful hacking machine. They will do the same on the wii and seeing as it is so small it's amazingly portable. You could fit your entire hacking machine into a briefcase.
A lot of people will do it just so they can say that they have done it.

Me personally, my Wii will be a gaming machine. I have a computer to browse the internet, and that won't be running linux either.

WiiLii Sounds terrific to me. It may never happen but would be nice. Same as the DVD player, the more you can pack into that tiny little box the better.
Get rid of clutter and cables and leave more space for swinging the WiiMote around hacking peoples heads off etc.

Actually, Ubuntu Linux is the easiest to use. Download the Live CD and give it a spin. You burn the iso to a CD, and boot up the cd from the CD drive. Nothing gets installed and you can have a fully operational OS.

They would cose linux because the developers of linux are more open minded. Drivers for the wiimote and the network would be written quicker, the kernel can be optimized and LOTS of applications could be compiled for the wii format, where as in Windows, everything is closed and cant run on anything but your average PC. How freakin boring!!!

Do you need to run the wii as a computer i just want to put games in turn it on and play... also use it to d/load vc games.....its getting pretty darn technical.

I know this means i probably wont be getting max usage from the wii but i got a computer for all the rest of the stuff

if they did actually do that, how would you operate it? I understand you could use the pointer as a mouse, but they would probably have to make like an attachable usb keyboard for wii.

Id say you could either use an on-screen keyboard, someone would probably write some usb keyboard drivers, or you could even use the DS microphone to use festival, a speech-to-text application. That would be freakin sweet! The thing about the linux platform, is if its possible, someone will eventually do it. If you get a linux OS running on the Wii, you can then compile a playstation 1 emulator, mame or even (with qemu) run Windows from within a linux session... how freaky would that be. Ive seen a clip of WinXP run inside linux on a PS3. thats pretty whacky.
