Nintendo Refuse To Deal With Harvey Norman

David Richards - Monday, 6 November 2006

The hottest CE product this Xmas the Nintendo Wii will not be sold at Harvey Norman after the Japanese gaming giant refused point blank to accept Harvey Normans trading terms.

“They are telling the market that we are in discussions with them but this is not true. We don’t like their terms or the way they operate and we are refusing to do business with them.” said Nintendo Public Relations Manager, Vispi Bhopti.

He added “We are dealing with most mass retailers with the exception of Harvey Norman. Their terms are ridiculous. The Nintendo Wii is set to be a hot product going into the peak Xmas buying period so why should we give away margin to Harvey Norman. We are confident that the new Nintendo gaming console will drive sales during the peak buying period that is coming up”

Richard Uechtritz the Managing Director of JB Hi Fi said “The Nintendo Wii is going to be a big seller. It is a very different type of gaming machine than the Xbox 360 or the Sony PS3. We believe that it will appeal to a wider audience other than gamers. It will reach an older audience and females and we are confident that it will be a very successful product this Xmas.” In answer to being told that Harvey Norman were being denied the product Uechtritz said “Their bullying is coming back to bite them. This is one product that Harvey Norman wanted and I believe that a lot of vendors will take note of what Nintendo have done in refusing to accept Harvey Norman’s terms”.

Harvey Norman got owned. They are so overpriced anyway, they probably would have found a way to mark up the Wii if they did sell it, like every other product they sell.

Harvey Norman expect you to barter with them rather thn just accept their price.

Harvey Norman have never sold nintendo products in the past anyway. They didn't sell the ds or the gamecube or any nintendo games. They are very much in favour of xbox and sony

So does anyone know what these "crazy" terms that nintendo refused are. Probibly wanting to increase the price or something along those lines but it would be interesting to know.

Well it was a wise move by harvey norman not to stock cube hardware and software considering all the other retailers lost a lot of money on cube stock, i'm surprized a lot of other department stores havent refused to deal with the wii.
I would imagine harveys terms were somewhere along the line of "if it doesnt sell then you (nintendo) have to buy it back from us (harvey norman) at cost price".

Actually, nintendo are the problem in this case. they have terrible trading terms. everything they do is firm sell.. ie you buy 100 games of barbies racing adventure because the rep tells you it's going to be the next big thing.. what happens when it turns out to be the worst piece of crap ever? too bad says nintendo, and the retailer has to end up dropping the price to 10 dollars to burn the games off... where other manufacturers will do a rotation of stock for something that isnt a piece of ****. this doesnt give the retailer flexibility to have stock on hand.. hence you get stores with very little games on hand and only stocking "safe" titles (does this sound familiar, cube owners?). HN *did* stock Gamecube... but when Ninty refused to have flexible trading terms to allow retailers to operate.. they had no choice but to stop stocking the cube.

this exact fact is one of the reasons the cube failed in aus.. they treated their retailers terribly. It's also one of the reasons you didnt see alot of games in stores.. retailers weren't willing to take the risk because it was firm sell rather than SOR (sale-or-return) or SOE (sale-or-exchange). Alot of myer stores also dropped the cube due to this.. I am surprised that some retailers have re-stocked the new console. I really hope Nintendo look at this because it is ultimately the Gamer who suffers.... there are less games on less shelves.. which make the console less accessible... which makes less people buy the console

..which puts less money in Nintendos pocket... which leaves the people who bought the console up the creek without a paddle with average game releases and support due to a failing console ...

Gamecube owners...feel the painful memories

while I hate the **** out of Harvey Norman, and I'm glad to see them get stung, which they really deserve, I think this might hurt Nintendo as well. While I personally would never even consider shopping at HN, a lot of people do, and some people in more rural areas don't have a choice, and that's sales lost for Nintendo. Oh well, I was planning to buy most of my games from ebay anyway.

If a rural town is big enough to have a Harvey Norman then chances are it will have other stores like Target which sell the games.

Harvey Norman is a family kind of store in that families will be cruising through looking at furnature for their new or existing homes... its a shame for Nintendo that their family console wont be on show when this occurs. I think that Harvey may have been on to something when he set standards that he wanted met. I think for the sake of hitting the market hard they should have considered stocking this store. Having said that though im not sure exactly how much they were asking for. Perhaps they wanted to order too little or wanted to select spesific titles to purchase as theyh know some will be left on the shelves.

The sale or return thing is exactly correct! Plus lack of support with slow moving titles adds to the frustration. You will find some Harvey Norman stores choose to stock Nintendo regardless, always making sure to order small amounts and only the titles that are sure to sell. Two stores in the Sydney city area stock Nintendo and I've been told there are a couple in Melbourne too.
