Wii Software \ Change From Nintendo

I don't know if I'm alone here, but does anybody else think that it's time that Nintendo drastically updated their famous franchises?
Since the last Nintendo console I owned was a N64 and since then I owned a PS1 and PS2, I had forgotten almost all about Nintendo until I bought my Wii.
Games like Mario, Zelda and Metroid really haven't changed that much (except maybe Metroid). Zelda is pretty much the same game as it was 10 years ago except in 3D. Sure, they mix things around a bit with games like Paper Mario, but they're all so similar.
Wouldn't you want a Mario game with a real story? A Zelda or Pokemon game set in some different timeline or one where Link is a real character and not a block of polygons that can say YES or NO? A Smash Bros. game with a story on the scale of Kingdom Hearts? Or God forbid, something NEW?
It seems that sticking to a familiar formula is safe and brings up nostalgia for some people, but many of today's gamers have never played old Nintendo games. The standard of video games as media is constantly increasing and it's disappointing to see Nintendo lagging behind.
By no means am I saying that Nintendo games are /bad/ but they're so similar that it leaves me craving something more.
They need to step up and do something radical with their games. A motion controller? Whoop-de-do. Touch-screen? That's nice, but does it really add so much?

But for now, this is just my opinion. Thanks for reading my rant.

yeah i hope they try something new for the second half of wii... i guess we'll just have to wait for e3 hey. but yeah i still love their games, they always seem to be able to equal or better the previous games. a new nintendo franchise wouldn't go astray though...

they should allow Suda-51 to make an mario game for adults, that would help them alot but if Nintendo tried changing some of the games it might end up hurting the franchise if people don't like the change.

i think you've made the wrong choice in buying the Wii. The Wii is never going to be like the PS3 or 360 (and thank God for that).

there are a lot of crap games on the Wii, but the same goes for the other consoles. however, there are games on the Wii that you will never see on other consoles.

you're never going to get the same experience of fun and enjoyment of playing tennis or bowling using a control pad on the PS3 than using the WiiMote. when Pro Evolution Soccer comes out, play it with the Wii for a while, then try playing it on the PS3 with the control pad - you'll see how much you'll miss the WiiMote.

yes, there is a lack of great shooters on the Wii, but shooters are not really "NEW". a lot of new games today are in fact also just rehashes of the old ones, albeit better graphics and improved AI. in fact, the Wii is the only new generation console that has brought in NEW genre of games, whereas the 360 and PS3 is flooded with the same old shooter, racing game, sports game, fighting, etc.

having said that, i do love the games that has come out on the PS3/360, but i won't expect the Wii to follow the rabbit down the hole, i like it how it is.

It's like alotta things really, they play with a well used, tried and tested formula and just stick to that.
As far as pokemon goes, it works so why bother changing it. Well there have been changes as the generations go along but the basic formula is there and it work.

Really you don't have to just look at nintendo and their franchises, others are just as bad or have games that are same as one another only a different setting and "prettier looking" than previous generations. I mean look at the likes of Halo series, its pretty much the same each time, just with new things here and there.

There is the other side of the coin where you try and do something each time, much like the Crash Bandicoot series, it's just degenerated into one big mashup of well anything and everything now, since it left Naughty Dog's hands.

Certainly a change of pace from the bog standard controllers on xbox. Though some games do use the Wii-mote's ability well, other games it is more of a gimmiky thing so its kinda even in that area.

It does add a new element to games and there are plenty out there that use it and others that dont but more of a secondary screen for maps and of the like

Nintendo doesn't include stories in their Mario games because Nintendo games have always been about sticking to a time-tested formula that's guaranteed to be fun. Something I have found lacking in Nintendo games that is unacceptable is the lack of voice acting. In zelda, you may as link nod, grunt and scream but can't even say hello... Why? Because the bastard is a silent protaganist.

However, the reason I play Nintendo games is because I know they're going to be fun; and they are. Even if they do not change the franchise a little.

That said, a new IP needs to be made. The industry needs a new Nintendo character. Introducing new ways to play has however done wonders for Nintendo with gamers and casual non-gamers alike.

Hope you read that! XD

But hasn't this left any of you thinking that Nintendo are purely in it for the MONEY? Sometimes you need to take risks. I guess you could say the Wii was a risk, but then again I'm pretty sure Nintendo knew that people would be all over the motion control gimmick.

They seem to be losing touch with the serious gamer and are focusing on the moneybags being held by the 'casual' gamer. There's almost no advertising at all for games that aren't Wii Fit or Brain Training and games like these have a higher priority to Nintendo than something like Smash Bros.

Companies are out to make money, sure, but then what about supporting those who have supported you for so long?

I'm angry and I have to vent my rage.

the Wii was never developed for the "serious" gamer. in fact Nintendo's consoles were never intended for the hardcore gaming scene. ever since the Game and Watch, Nintendo has always marketed to the "young" and "casual" gamers.

the Wii is the cheapest among the 3 major consoles today.
SONY and MICROSOFT, and NINTENDO are all in it for the money.

Out of the 3 companies, which one do you think cares a little bit more for their customers? Honestly now?

again, if you are disappointed with the Wii, just switch to another console (PS3 or 360). or get a second one with the Wii. I know i would love to have all 3 of them. I might be tempted to get a PS3 just to play Metal Gear, Resident Evil 5, and the next Final Fantasy.

I already have a PS3 and I feel that Sony is putting a lot more effort into connecting with customers. First off, you can't ignore that they were losing up to USD$100 for each PS3 they sold. Then making games region free solved many problems for importing. Then game release delays seem to be almost non-existant around the world with the PS3 and 360. Then there's the Playstation.Blog where Sony actually listen to users and answer questions.

Aren't you angered at all that Nintendo are more concerned with releasing Wii Fit than Brawl in Aus?

yes it's annoying, but i'm not angry. i know we'll get Brawl eventually. it's just our luck that we live in Australia (smaller market, geographical location, PAL system, etc. etc.). there are so many reasons why release dates are different for all regions, and we can't analyze them all, but one thing i know - they don't delay a game just because they want to crap all over us. Japan always gets the new games first, and they're on NTSC. guess which other region uses NTSC?

but i believe Mario Kart Wii and Mario Galaxy release dates are in the same month as all the other regions. Brawl is the only one that is up in the air at the moment, no release date yet for both AUS and EUROPE.

actually i'm more annoyed that there are many great games being released only in Japan. we never get to see those games.

and about Wii Fit, well, it's really not on the same level as SSBB is it?

i agree with you 100% winnie i kinda feel disappointed with nintendo i love my wii but i havent touched it for around 1 month because of the lack of quality games i mean u cant play zelda, metroid, mario and wii sports for ever i have heaps of improted games but the only one i really enjoyed was re4 so i think ninten has to start taking care of the serious gamer instead of always concentrating on gamers that can barely walk by themself or gamers that need a walking stick

I think Nintendo dosn't really put out as many good games in a consistant stream. Mind you this does happen with most consoles but I must say that right now it seems like I have about 10 games on pre-order for every console but the Wii... wait Mario Kart, OK 1/10 thats pretty poor. Oh andPokemon mysterious dungeon on DS aswell but it still dosn't say much for Nintendo...

I really don't know about all that. I believe Nintendo know what they are doing. They don't want to change the core gameplay or they'll alienate thier core fans and people who've grown up with Nintendo, but they need to freshen it up enough to make it feel new. Mario Galaxy feels new enough to be a proper new game, but still retains the core gameplay and the easily accessible fun-factor. This is the magic that only Nintendo can achieve. It's not like they've done nothing at all new since the N64. They moved Metroid into 3D with astounding success, and Pikmin is absolutly fantastic. People who buy Nintendo consoles expect the classic Nintendo titles they know and love, but don't want it to be a 100% rehash and that is what Nintendo delivers. WiiSports/Play/Fit are new, downloadable classic content is new, online play is new for Nintendo, and the new controller makes thier classic experiances new again. Even Prime 3, as similar as it is to the others, feels like a whole new game, as does Mario and Zelda. I'd like to see Nintendo maybe throw out another successful franchise, but i dont want them to change thier winning strategy on current successful franchises.

Change a winning formula? Pretty stupid, if you ask me.
Why would they change the whole concepts of some of these games, when they clearly work?

they should never talk. they will follow the same fate as sonic and his annoying ****ing voice. the great thing about zelda and metroid is that their epic and you take the persona of these characters. nintendo operates based upon putting people into a fantasy world where the user can believe they are the charcter. making these charsters talk would cause disconnect from user with the game.

Today's gamer might not want to read craploads of text. Today's gamer might be tired of old gameplay.

All I'm saying is that the old franchises need and deserve a modern makeover. If they suck, then go back to the old stuff. Either way the games will sell.

metroid 3 fixed that, they used a winning formula. let everyone speak apart from samus. it worked well.

But with a silent protagonist, do you really get attached to them at all? And it's not like a game where you play a REAL character is any less immersive. Imagine a movie that's completely in first person and the main character never talks. :/

don't compare movies and video games. i can easily get attached more to a character in a video game because i control the character, and in essence, that character is me. the guy in the movie, well, i just watch him do his thing.

master chief and gordon freeman have remained vox free since the start, and a lot of people would prefer things that way.

I guess it's my personal taste, then... I really hated Resistance: Fall of Man for having the main character have literally 3 lines in the whole game...

But I think it's more than reasonable to compare movies and video games. The gap between the two is narrowing every year to the extent that I think in the future "movie-games" will be a more popular medium for storytelling.
