Ok so here is the question that has stumped myself and my entire family:

7-3x/2=3 and the answer is meant to be 1/3.

My working so far would be:

7-3x*2=3*2
7-3x=6
3x=6+7
3x=13
x=4.33333333333

which is wrong any help to the correct answer?

(7-3x)/2 = 3

7 - 3x = 6

7 - 6 = 3x

1 = 3x

x= 1/3

u did 3x = 7 + 6.. but its meant to be -

so

3x=6+7

u obviously multiplied by -1 so -3x goes 3x -7 goes +7 but wait a minute the plus 6 did not go -6

4-12x = 40 (move the /5 to the other side, instead of diving, times, yeah? 8x5 = 40)
-12x = 36 (move 4 to otherside, take 4 from 40, 36)
x = -36/12
x = -3

-- i haven't done maths in ages, i got a feeling this is horribly wrong. rofl.. ive actually just gone back to school for a few days after hols.. so my brain is a bit rusty

you have to expand

[4(1-3x)]/5=8
so therefore
4(1-3x)= 5*8
4-12x=40
-12x=40-4
12x=-36
x=-36/12 and therefore x is equal to negative 3 (-3)

if u sub it in it becomes [4(1-3(-3))]/5=8
(2 negatives become a positive)
making it (4*(1+9))/5=8
so (4*10)/5=8 and therefore we conclude that it is 40/5 which is 8

this is not yet linear, linear is when u have 2 equations and u manipulate one equation to get another unknown and use it to solve 2 unknowns, this is basic algebra but it will lead to linear probally

yea tahts the way to go, if they all can get converted to a common denominator do it, so in this case noodles26 is right.. to follow on after u expand bring all the x's to one side and the numbers on the other remembering to change the signs etc
