Super Mario 64 - 8/10
Super Mario 64 was released for the N64 in 1996. It revolutionized the Mario series, by making it the firs 3D Mario game in the series. The story goes as follows:
Mario gets a letter from Princess Peach inviting him to come to her castle for a cake she has baked for him. When he arrives, Mario discovers that Bowser has invaded the castle and imprisoned the princess within it using the power of the castle's Power Stars. Mario has to go through the castle and rescue the Power Star's in other realms, which are accessed by jumping through paintings, which act as portals. He gains access to more rooms as he recovers more stars.
GAMEPLAY: 10/10
I give the gameplay 10/10 for a few reasons, the first being that it is innovative, easy to use and fun. The second reason is that it revolutionized the Mario games from then on. His controls are far more diverse than those of previous Mario games. He can walk, run, crouch, crawl, swim, climb, and jump using the game controller's analog stick and buttons.
GRAPHICS: 8/10
When it was first released, Super Mario 64 was praised for its graphics, making it very popular. But with todays graphical standards, they shrivel in comparison. But nevertheless, Super Mario 64 is the game that started the classic, cartoon-like look that the Mario games still have today, making them as unique as they are.
SOUND: 9/10
Again, the sound in Super Mario 64 was highly praised upon release. But, I have played some recent games with worse sound than Super Mario 64 (mine included!) There is a sound for almost everything that would make a sound in real life, and they are all sharp and clear. The music is great, the sounds always match the moment, and are overall fantastic! Maybe not completely up to todays standards, but very close indeed-y-doo!
REPLAY VALUE 6/10
Okie-dokie! Maybe one of the let downs about this game is the replay value. Once you finish this game, you aren't going to play it for say, 12 months. But once you pull out about 4 games and finish all of them, you're gonna want to play this game again!
OVERALL: 8/10
This game is a must get on the VC, because it's the game that started the present look of Mario games, and is a big piece of Nintendo history.
