Streets of Rage II - 9/10

Mr. X is at it again! The notorious criminal kingpin has risen from the shadows, sending out gangs of minions turning the streets into chaos. Axel and Blaze find out that Adam (fellow fighter from Streets of Rage) has been kidnapped by X’s men. With Adam’s younger brother Skate and wrestler Max joining the roster, the team of four begin their journey to free Adam and finally rid Mr. X and his punk gangsters from the city streets.



Graphics 8/10
The graphics in Streets of Rage 2 are a vast improvement over the original title. The character animations are much larger and more flowing. As you make your way though each stage, the backgrounds are immersive with good use of bright colours and scenery.

Sound 10/10
This game’s soundtrack is brilliant, complimenting each of the stages. SoR2 has lots of great tracks to get you pumped to kick some ass!

Game Play 8/10
This Double Dragon style game has plenty of cool moves, effectively using a 3 button control scheme to deliver devastating moves to anyone standing in your way. Each character has a two brutal special moves. Each time you perform these moves, life will be lost. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as your life determines how much you can implement these moves. The ability to pick up enemies weapons including knives, pipes and katanas is included to even up the fight. The 2 player co-op mode is a great inclusion. The only issue I have with this is that each player can get each other in a hold, which is sometimes very difficult to get out of, leaving you vulnerable to attacks.

Replay Value 8/10
Streets of Rage 2 is a very enjoyable game with plenty of replay value. I remember first playing this game at the Myer Centre and being blown away by how fun this game really is - I still love it to this day. Being able to team up with another mate and fight your way to Mr. X is the icing on the cake.

My 2 Cents
The standard difficulty is fairly easy to complete the game on, so I suggest using the secret Mania mode setting to deliver a solid challenge. SoR2 is a must have title from the current collection of SEGA titles on the Virtual Console. This was SEGA’s answer to the SNES’ fighter: Final Fight. Overall very similar titles, but SoR2 is the pick of the two as Final Fight is missing multiplayer game modes.
