Wii Hardware \ Wiikey help

desi said: Does anyone know how exactly the CD drive knows when to draw a disc in, anyway? I've been Googling for schematics for self-loading disc drives to figure out how it does it (Wii has one, iMac has one, most car stereos have one) but haven't gotten a thing.

I thought it was a little sensor or some soft button that get's pushed in when the cd touches it.

It's quite interesting looking at the design of the Wii dvd drive. It has a special runs to direct a gamecube disc to the centre. I never realised how well it work until the other day, when, for some strange reason, I accidently put the gamecube disc right at the top of the slot, instead of the bottom. It just slid in and worked. Weird.

slot-loading mechanism - the disc is slid into a slot and drawn in by motorised roller. the edges of the disc come into contact with the rollers which guide the disc in. the rollers are situated a bit towards the middle of the drive, that is why you need to push the disc in a little bit before being taken up.

www.patentmonkey.com/ = patent lodge by the Matsush1ta company.

there's supposed to be a switch that detects the insertion of a disc.

Your right Desi...there isnt much out there.

At this point I would like to speculate that they use a small led that when the cd breaks the beam that it then starts the motors.

But only speculation... In saying that I think my sony head unit has a little switch that gets pushed by the disk.

Sorry boys just finished work, nah the disc was put in the right way. Yeah jacaz has a point i did notice some excess solder on the bottom left circuit board that might have fallen onto it. Dunno if that has anything to do with the cd tray. I have connected the ribbon and power plug to the dvd drive also. Also when soldering the chip if the 3 bottom points that connect the chip to the board are bridged will that cause a problem.

Hey Jase,

I had a customer come in with this same problem after months of the Wiikey working fine. I tried for ages to fix it but I couldn't. Them I swapped the drive into another Wii and it came back to life, then I swapped it back and it worked fine. I don't know quite what I did, but it might help.

Also, I haven't bothered reading all the other threads so someone might have already mentioned it, but have you tried bridging that fuse thing. There's been lots of talk about bridging a blown fuse to fix dead drives. Search other forums for more info.

JackAz says:

If the 3 points are running together that will cause a problem.

Get a solder sucker of some description and try those points again.
(It's really a two man job)
Heat up the solder so it runs, place the solder sucker in the solder and press the button.

Otherwise, try and seperate the points with your soldering iron, though I don't recommend it.
