Firstly thanks for replying - would you believe I can't get anything on the screen now - but it said something about the tv recorder is not set to this setting and the screen went black except for this message we cannot use the remotes and can't get back to any menus. Figured factory settings reset was our only option

If your Wii is displaying an error message than there's nothing wrong with your Wii's video output. Otherwise it wouldn't be able to display the error message.
