Wii Hardware \ How to get online?

mick8569 says:

Sorry to ask such a stupid question, im just having difficulty understanding this and i dont want to buy the wrong thing.

I have cable at home, but its not wireless. so to get online do i just buy a wi-fi usb, install on pc and away i go? does it have to be the nintendo one? because all the official websites say the nintendo one is specific for ds and wont work for anything else..... Im assuming that is just out of date? can i buy any wifi usb off ebay for around AU$30 that dont mention wii compatibility? how close does the computer have to be to the wii? does it matter if there are walls between the two? is there any fees for being online? or are only fees for dl'ing VC games?

Sorry for the barrage of noob questions, thanks a lot for any guidance,
Mick.

Third-party Wi-Fi adapters exist. As I understand, they work just as well (for the DS, at least). Official websites will always tell you that only licensed products work.

Online services, aside from VC and other pay-for-download content, are free. No monthly subscription, free online play etcetera.

As for distance between units and walls in between and interference, it changes from house to house. Some hosues get great range. Others are bad even when they're touching the adapter itself (and it's an official Nintendo adapter).

But really, just get yourself a wireless router. If you're spending money, you may as well future-proof your network so that you can add laptops or 'internet picture frames' later on. I've got a D-Link 512 which is nice and cheap, but the only bad thing about it is that my revision isn't compatible with my DS. Wii works flawlessly, though.

Thanks for the help guys

The problem with the official one is that it says it only works for ds and nothing else, so literally interpreted; it wouldnt work with the wii. but i will look into a wireless router if its not gonna cost a heap more. ill go have a chat to the good folk down at EB tomorow. anyway, back to zelda.

thanks again guys
