Im assuming that is just out of date? can i buy any wifi usb off ebay for around AU$30 that dont mention wii compatibility? how close does the computer have to be to the wii? does it matter if there are walls between the two? is there any fees for being online? or are only fees for dl'ing VC games?
Third-party Wi-Fi adapters exist. As I understand, they work just as well (for the DS, at least). Official websites will always tell you that only licensed products work.
Online services, aside from VC and other pay-for-download content, are free. No monthly subscription, free online play etcetera.
As for distance between units and walls in between and interference, it changes from house to house. Some hosues get great range. Others are bad even when they're touching the adapter itself (and it's an official Nintendo adapter).
But really, just get yourself a wireless router. If you're spending money, you may as well future-proof your network so that you can add laptops or 'internet picture frames' later on. I've got a D-Link 512 which is nice and cheap, but the only bad thing about it is that my revision isn't compatible with my DS. Wii works flawlessly, though.
