I've spent about $1500 on mine so far. $1800 including the monitor. It will stay at the high end until late this year, and I don't plan to upgrade until June 2008. It's a steep purchase, to be sure, but you need a PC anyway, so you may as well put down a few hundred more and make it a gaming PC.
Lots of people say you need to update every six months. This is silly. I recommend upgrading GPU and CPU alternately every twelve to eighteen months. It will be expensive for good gear — at least $300. GPUs can run up to $1000, CPUs up to $1500.
Of course, you only need to upgrade if you want to run games on super-high quality. For years I was playing FPS happily on my P3 667Mhz, 128MB RAM, NVIDIA TNT2 64MB. Load times sucked (five whole minutes between Half-Life levels), but the games were playable.
