Seen something on wifi that seems so broken it's unfair? The following is a collection of techniques which can help improve your gameplay.

IMPORTANT
Any of these techniques if repeated in a predictable pattern can be punished quite easily. The key to winning in Brawl is to incorporate these techniques into your gameplay. Mindgames play a big part in this game, make your movements varied and unpredictable because if your opponent doesn't know what you're going to do next it'll be harder for them to hit you.

Scott or anyone feel free to correct all the mistakes I've made or suggest other techniques.

B reversal everyone except Sonic, Olimar & Metaknight
Press B to perform a neutral B attack then immediately slam the control stick in the opposite direction you are facing. Your character will do the neutral B attack facing the opposite direction. This can be useful if you are running away and want to shoot a laser at your enemy as you run away.

DAC / DACUS Jigglypuff, Sheik, Link, Wario, Snake, Falco & Wolf
Sliding Usmash. This is done on the GC controller. While running/dashing press down on the C-stick then immediately press up on the control stick and your standard attack button or grab. The timing for this is very precise and it will take practice to be able to incorperate into your gameplay, but this technique is very useful.

Glide Toss Zero Suit Samus, Peach, ROB, Diddy, Wario in particular
Hold L or R and press left or right to roll. While doing so if you press the C stick in any direction while holding an item you will throw that item while rolling. This is useful for Zamus' armour pieces, Peach's turnips, ROB's gyro, Diddy's bananas and Wario's bike parts and can be performed by most other characters.

Edge Popping Most characters but is particularly useful for the following: Mario, Bowser, Wario, Fox, Link, Toon Link, Ganondorf, Captain Falcon, Samus, Squirtle, Marth)

After using your upB move hold down when near an edge and you will not sweetspot the edge and continue attacking. This is useful for mindgames and with particular attacks like Squirtle's Waterfall & Mario's Coin Punch.

Reverse Aerial Rush (All characters)
When facing an opponent or when running towards an opponent if you quickly tap away just before you press jump the character will keep their momentum but jump towards the opponent with their back to them. This is useful for characters with highly effective Bairs (such as Game & Watch, Yoshi, DK, Wolf etc) as it allows them to travel forward while doing their Bairs. This is also useful for people with tethers, particularly Samus as it allows you to run away, turn around, short hop facing them and hit your opponent with a Zair with little to no risk of punishment.

Pivot Grab (All characters)
The pivot grab is a retreating grab. While running in a direction tap back and press grab simultaneously and you will turn around and grab your opponent. The lag for these grabs is usually much less punishable than normal grabs and characters with tethers usually benefit the most as it can catch opponents running into you if done when retreating (Yoshi, Ivysaur, Zero Suit Samus, Lucas, Samus, Link, Toon Link and Olimar)

Retreating Attacks (All characters)
For each character's side B & F Smash attacks it is possible to do these attacks while slightly retreating. If each time you use these attacks you dash away for a split second before you enter the attack the character will take one step back and attack. The timing for this is very small, if you leave it too late you will just do a dash attack away from your opponent.

This may not seem fancy but it is quite useful to avoid getting hit, especially as a way of retreating gradually while attacking with any character who has a side B projectile. This is also useful for Smash attacks of characters who have a good range on their F Smash (like Pikachu or Lucario). Characters with side B attacks that push them forward can use this technique to punish air attacks (like Captain Falcon or Peach).

Claw Jumping (Bowser)
Claw jumping allows Bowser to bounce by being able to jump of the ground each time he touches it. To claw hop do his side B while descending to the ground then press jump just before you touch it.

Ice Block Lock (Ice Climbers)
From above 25% perform the following combo out of a grab:
*D throw
*Nana full hop to F air
*spam neutral B

Ice Climber’s Chain Grab (Ice Climbers)
There are many different variations of the Ice Climber’s chain grabs, but some of the more common ones are:
*Dthrow -> Dthrow (under 20%)
*Dthrow -> Nana Fair -> grab (under 35%)
*Fthrow -> Nana grab -> Fthrow (various percents)
*smashing the opponent with Nana while in grab (for KOing)

Snake Grab Release KO (against Snake)
If Snake is grabbed while doing his up B near the edge and isn't thrown or damaged by a grab then when he is released he will be unable to use his up B again. This is extremely useful near the edge for an early KO, however beware as a smart Snake player can still use his mines to recover if they aren't already on the stage.

This occurs at 2:11, 2:54, and 4:33 in this video

Magnet Pull (Lucas)
While in the air with Lucas shoot a PK fire the opposite direction to what you are travelling then use his down B and you will slide a move across the air quickly with his shield out. This is useful for mindgames, escaping from a situation, recovery from up high and for catching projectiles while moving with your shield. Setting your C-stick to special (also known as B-sticking) makes this technique easier.

Infinite Dimensional Cape Metaknight
This allows Metaknight to remain hidden indefinitely with his down B. To execute press down B then immediately mash the C-stick up as fast as you can. If done right Metaknight will remain hidden. You can move left & right by mashing up left and up right respectively on the C-stick, however as you can’t see yourself it is very dangerous and easy to suicide with. This technique is illegal in tournies.

Super Armour (Charizard, DK, Ganondorf, Ike, Dedede, Olimar, Pit, Snake, Squirtle, Wario, Yoshi)
Some moves in Brawl have what is called super armour which makes a character invincible temporarily in that when they are hit while doing certain moves the character will take damage but won’t suffer knockback, often even if they would otherwise be KOed. This applies to only certain frames of certain moves, but it is useful to know as super armour moves can save your life on high percents.

*Charizard up B, side B
*DK fully charged B, up B
*Ganondorf side B
*Ike neutral B, up B
*King Dedede up B
*Olimar down B
*Pit down B
*Snake up B (semi-super armour)
*Squirtle F smash
*Wario F smash, down B
*Yoshi Yoshi’s second jump (semi-super armour)

Lagless Pikmin Pluck (Olimar)

This allows you to attack or roll immediately after pulling out a Pikmin making you less vulnerable. Press B to pull out a Pikmin then immediately press whatever you wish to do (smash attack, grab or roll work well).

Quick Attack Cancel (QAC) (Pikachu)

QAC allows Pikachu to up B into the ground then pull off any move immediately after he finishes. This is great for mindgames and reaching parts of the stage quickly however it is easily punishable if spammed. To perform angle his up B into the ground so that the second part is done grounded facing down. You will immediately be able to perform an any attack including aerials making it seem like Pikachu never touches the ground.

Arrow Looping (Pit)

Arrow looping is where Pit curves his arrows in a circle so they stay on the stage for a longer period of time. To do this shoot an arrow then rotate the control stick slowly in a circle. Pit will also move while you do this so be careful, but it is possible to get multiple arrows looping (known as swarming)

Missile Canceling (Samus)

This allows you to shoot cancel the lag on missiles in the air, allowing you to send up to 3 at your opponent in a short space of time. This is extremely punishable if used up close so make sure you’re far away if you use this.

Bomb Jumping (Samus)
Lay a bomb while in the air then drop another bomb while aligned vertically with the first bomb. The bomb explosion propels Samus upward or diagonally upward and can be repeated several times in a row to aid in recovery.

Scarring (Wolf – stage dependant)

Drop down off a ledge when hanging and do his side B. If done correctly he will travel to the centre of the stage without taking any damage. This will work on the following stage:

*Battlefield
*Yoshi's Island
*Smashville
*Bridge of Eldin
*Norfair
*Frigate Orpheon
*Pokemon Stadium 2
*Distant Planet
*Spear Pillar
*The Great Sea (right side only)
*WarioWare
*Green Hill Zone
*Rainbow Cruise (right side only)

Short Hop Double Laser (SHDL) (Falco)

This technique allows Falco to be continuously firing lasers while hopping. He can do a short hop (done by just tapping the jump button) then fire two lasers before he touches the ground without any landing lag leaving him free to follow up with any move.

Stale Move Negation

Brawl punishes players who spam a small number of moves by making spammed moves do less damage and knockback (how far an attack sends an opponent flying). The game remembers the last 9 moves which connected in a queue so the only way to refresh the moves is to hit the opponent with other moves.

This also means that if you want to KO your opponent as early as possible it is a wise strategy to save your KO move until you are guaranteed a KO. For example by not using Fox’s U Smash until your opponent is on 105% would guarantee you a KO. This is called keeping your moves fresh, as when they become stale they lose power.

Recovering Strategies
There are a few things you can do in Brawl to make you live to a much higher percentage. If you are sent flying off the stage, try using the following techniques

*DI. This refers to bending your trajectory when hit by an attack so that you survive longer. To do this press a direction perpendicular to the angle you've been sent flying as soon as you get hit (left or right if sent skyward, straight up if sent to the side)

*As soon as you are sent flying use your fastest aerial attack (DK's Bair, Snake's Bair etc). This helps slow your momentum as you approach the edge of the screen and is more effective than air dodging.

Using the above two techniques can help your character live for up to an extra 20% longer than normally if used correctly. Always remember to be unpredictable with your recoveries, and try not to rely on grabbing the ledge unless you are certain your opponent isn't going to edgeguard you by grabbing the edge.

KOing Strategies

Below is a list of all characters and their respective KO moves. Each percentage represents what percentage they kill Mario off the centre of Final Destination. Characters heavier than Mario will require more damage, and characters lighter than him will need less damage to be KOed.
Character weight list will be made when I get around to it.

*Add an extra 10% if the move you’re using isn’t fresh.

*All Smash attacks can KO around 15-20% when fully charged.

*It’s a good idea to use more than one possible move for KOing, as using only one move will make you predictable and can easily be avoided.

*Sweetspotted refers to the fact that these moves only cause massive knockback if they hit with a certain part of the attack (Captain Falcon’s knee, Zelda’s foot)

*All U Air attacks and Luigi’s Nair can KO up to 30% earlier by hitting an airborne opponent with them near the top of the screen. Likewise all other attacks can KO up to 10% earlier when done to opponents near the edge.

*If your opponent knows how to DI there is a good chance that they can survive up to 10% longer than an opponent who can’t. To get around this don’t use a KO move until 10% later than you normally would against opponents who can DI. DI will be explained at a later date

*KOing throws under 160% have been included as quite often against opponents with good defense a throw is the safest way to KO at high percentages.

Pokemon Trainer’s Pokemon all have an invisible two minute fatigue meter whereby if they have been in play for over two minutes their attacks do less damage and take around 25% more damage to KO. To prevent this keep switching your Pokemon within the two minute time frame, as each Pokemon’s meter recovers two seconds for every second he is kept in a Pokeball and not in play.
