A little maths help?

Hey I have been using cross division or whatever it is called to simplify but my teacher can't teach for a light bulb which means he adds a million different ways of using it. So I was hoping somebody knew the other way of simplifying?

ie. starting with: (x + 1)(x^2-x-30)

Into :
(x+1)(x???)(X???)

first

(X^2 - x -30)

what 2 things times to get - 30?
-5 and 6
-6 and 5
-15 and 2
-2 and 15
3 and -10
10 and -3

these two numbers must add up to the coeffeicent of the x ie the middle one... so the only one that adds up to -1 is -6 and 5 thus it is

(x-6) ( x+ 5)

just expand and u see

I could do maths in year 11, then I dropped it for yr12, now I suck, turns out one of my subjects for uni has studies as assumed knowledge, crap.

well i find factorings and expanding EASY so (x + 1)(2x-30) first simple times the numbers together
2x2-30x+2x-30
then simply
2x2-28x-30

then simply
2x2-28x-30
ok

You can simplify this more so it becomes 2(x^2-14x-15) due to the fact that all the numbers have a 2 as a common factor.
