No, it was a movement in 2001 to get people in several countries (including Australia) to enter Jedi as their religion in census forms. The one last year was 'Pastafarian'.

Anyway, what exactly would make it stupid? Other religions could be called just a frivolous. Building a religion on a series of movies bears little difference to building one on a collection of books.

It's called tithing. In the mainstream religions peolpe donate to the church or temple so that it can keep its laypeople fed and housed, and so that it can provide support to the local community in the form of housing and food for the homeless, or extra school funding, or indirect donation.

My general problem with religion centers around broken promises. Practicing a religion, even casually, announces to others that you are bound by your religion's tenets. In the case of Christianity it's non-agression, forgiveness, charity, fidelity etcetera. When you dishonour a tenet, you have broken a promise. A promise must be honored, even a promise that billions of people have made also. All a man has is his word.

Where there is no promise made there can be no promise broken.

Yeah the church of Satan is as bogus as the church of scientology which, in turn, is as bogus as Georgedubaya's presidency. They are both made up mainly of stars for shock value e.g. CoS: Kind Diamond, Marilyn Manson Scientology: Tom Cruise, Issac Heyes ect... I don't recognise them as true religions for that reason... Desi is right though, some of the worst people I've met are Catholic racists who are just bastards, practising human secularism is a good idea and is the basic message for all of the three Biblical churches(Judaism, Islam and Christianity) the only problem is the fact that they are pretty much saying

"ALL religions are equal, so if you join OUR church we can be equal together!"

I'm somewhat Religious but I do believe that Religion is a stupid Idea that only causes pointless conflict...

I find it very interesting, and very indicative of the direction in which modern religious worship is going to find that belief systems experiencing a large boom in interest and growth (Kabbalah, Church of Satan, Scientology) are more like social clubs than organised religions.

Again I attribute this to the deindividualisation that comes with high-density living, especially in cities. This is why people make grafitti; this is why kids dress unconventionally and act out; this is why they cut and OD and love body modification. This is why people join trendy religions and tell anyone and everyone about it: to differentiate themselves from the next person.

There is undoubtedly something wrong with that, a person feeling unremarkable. Something that no amount of religion or technology or manpower can fix. And it will never be fixed, because to fix it is to regress.

Thanks for clearing that up, desi. You've pretty much patched my point up.

But one thing I should mention is that the "most common" form of Satanism you're referring to is that of the Church of Satan.

Now...the Church of Satan was founded in 1966 by Anton LaVey, basically a washed up actor. His "influences" for starting up the church derived from horror films and other occult fictions. This would leave suspicion that the Church of Satan was created not through faith but rather through the desire for wealth and fame.

Ok think of it this way...Anton LaVey...washed up actor, not a lot of money and not a good reputation at the time. Now take into consideration L. Ron Hubbard (founder of the Church of Scientology). He once stated:

“If you want to make a little money, write a book. If you want to make a lot of money, create a religion.”

This was quite a famous quote by Hubbard. So it's possible that it may have reached LaVey's attention. And like all commercially successful organisations, it must have controversy. And what's more controversial in 1960's Christian America? The Devil.

So what I'm really getting at is that the Church of Satan is really much like a cult. Though the teachings are much like that of Secular Humanism, as you pointed out, it makes you ponder on LaVey's intentions, the Church's integrity and what the believers of the church really want from their faith. Inaccurate. Check your facts. The most common form of Satanism is more of an idea than a religion. The point of Satanism is not to be 'like Satan', but to break away from the Good versus Evil mentality that appear in other religions and in society at large. To do what is best for you, regardless of whether others think it's right or wrong.

However, this idea is also very close to Secular Humanism (in which there is no good or evil, and as people create their own problems, so can they fix them — in terms of RPG alignment it would be True Neutral), so I agree with Elraro's observation that people who call themselves Satanist are simply trying to belong to a label.

A church I used to attend often mentioned in its weekly pamphlet that Satanists were living just down the street. People freaked out. They probably thought it was a blood cult, that people in red and black would come to the church and confront 'good Christians'. It was disgusting that people who hold themselves above others because of their religion's inclusivity and lax forgiveness policy would judge these people based on words taken from an unverifiable source, based on an archaic notion of Christian persecution.

Ask the guy next to you in church how often he confesses, or if he holds grudges, or if he is faithful. I tell you now, there are worse things than Satanists. Most often, it's the guy next to you in church who's more bigoted than they.

Theistic Satanism = You worship Satan directly as a god or deity.

Atheistic Satanism = Satan acts like a Buddha figure in the sense that you don't worship him or anyone/thing else. Rather, Satan is just a figure to point you in the right direction.

As for WHY people practise Satanism, it can be for two reasons:

a) It works for them
b) Attention whores trying to make themselves out to be "badass"

Just because Satan is portrayed as the embodiment of evil, doesn't mean some people can't think otherwise. A lot of fundamentalist/extremist sects of Christianity have declared Allah and Buddha as evil because they don't follow Christ

But the thing is, "religion" typically relates to an idea which is put into practice through worship and praise of a higher being. Because of this, religion just wouldn;t be religion if it wasn;t practised.

Buddhism is a great religion because it's really the least controversial out of the lot due to the lack of extremists (the sole reason for the atrocities commited on this planet) I reckon Buddhism contains the least number of extremists primarily because:

a) No seperate denominations (that I can think of)
b) Peace and harmony is actually PRACTICED and not just preached.
c) No higher being to praise/fear (Remember, Buddha is just a figure or symbol to point you in the right direction)
d) No hunger for power, wealth or control.

If I was bothered enough, I'd really try Buddhism out. Nirvana ftw haha

Remember, it's not "God", "Satan" or religion who is to blame for all the despair and violence in the world...the only person responsible for all that is the very same person you see staring back at you infront of a mirror.

These sorts of discussions border on dangerous territory. No one really knows enough about religion (even their own) to give a well structured and FACTUAL opinion.

I like to study Theology sometimes in my spare time and I love looking through as many religious rituals as I can. I've reserached a lot ranging from Islam to Voo Doo to Satanism (both theistic and atheistic forms). I find religion a great thing to spectate but it's not for me. I respect each and every religion, provided it's not a cult manufactured solely for profit and wealth (Scientology lawlz) but I just can't see myself kneeling down for anyone, especially not a "higher spiritual being". If I kneel down before anyone, it'll be because I got punched in the gut in a pub brawl haha.

*EDIT* I just read through some of the posts and noticed one of them indicating that we (humans) originated from Adam and Eve. Sure, fundamentalists will think that, but I believe that story was not actually the story of how man came to be but rather the story of Original Sin. Other than that, the story of Adam and Eve is much like that of Noah and the Ark...they go along the same lines as parables. Stories with morals attached to them. That's my 2 cents on that topic anyway.

yes I know what its like to be a parent and to try to explain why one god is more important to another is wrong all gods are wrong its a system of training if your parents teach you god is real you believe if your parents teach you Allah is real you believe if your Buddha is real you believe but in Australian public schools they teach god and Jesus which I don’t believe but cant stop my kids believing because the school teaches them that religion is an argument waiting to happen .

Does it seem odd to any of you that as soon as questions are raised about his thread Pyro went off to church? If you wanted to be fair you should have added Islam and Hinduism since they make up half od the worlds main religion, you are clearly not very knowing as you haven't added them and are being oh so preachy about singing to God. I think when I'm in church that God is just going "****, oh dammit they're singing again, NOT CHRISTIAN ROCK! Oh me no! I wish I'd put no christian music as a ****ing commanment"...

God did the same, he gave adam and Eve ability to choose...and guidlines that they should follow...they did the wrong thing, etc etc....now we are blessed enough to have the bible there to be our guidlines...and the ability to make the right choices....

Or an easier way of putting it...god makes you...and all you can do is walk forward in 1 straight line and you cant even look to your side....its just walking on a red line with a white everything else... cool huh? (note on sarcasm)

so we took the plunge into the water (ie the world) he made bridges (jesus) to the banks (eternal life with god) and wats easier, god gave us floatation devices and GPS systems....its what we do with them that determans how far we float towards or away from the banks

Thanks for not crushing Your own creation, when he's just exercising the free will You gave him? Thanks for not having the foresight to maybe hold back a little of that free will so that people wouldn't mess each other so bad?

I find the entire 'people do bad things because God gave them free will' argument to be facetious at best, vacuous at worst. God, being awesome, would naturally want the best for His children. Why He felt it necessary to test them by letting them do whatever they want has always escaped me, has always been anathema to what people say God should be.

It's like throwing ants into a puddle of water and expecting them to reach the banks, and damn any of them who don't.

okay LOL as my sister just walked in from "small groups" after i posted...and she handed me a sheet on history and stuff that they were studdying tonight...and the title is "what do other religions believe"

and it talks about judaism, hinduism, buddhism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormonism and islam...
but at a conclusion at the bottom...it states that "christianity is the only religion that puts the emphasis on GOD. Through grace we are saved. it is about us loving God, not about our good works."
so yea thats pretty cool and true...but thats also a view of were chatholics and "christians" may differ, as catholics pray to mary and some believe that through baptism you are saved etc....were as "christians pray straight to god...etc"

so you follow religion? and you say that christianity is people who pray to mary? well im christian, i dont think mary is holy...and i dont pray to her? in your books, im no longer christian..but in mine and "as i believe" in god...im still christian....and im still saved... now i dont know much about the history of religion and all that jazz as im only 15....but when that last one of my posts was written, i was at church...in emenate (my church drama group) and my friend "sasha" who was an intern at the church, wrote the post for me....you guys started a discussion at our group on what demonations are and differences between them etc etc...so i'll talk to my friends again about the first 2 later

1) Jewish people have a faith as well, It's called the Hebrew or Jewish faith...(no brainer?)

2) Protestants did not branch from the Jewish people, in fact they were one of the later sects of Christianity. The first sects of Christianity which branched from the Hebrew Religion were The Roman Catholic Church and The Orthodox Church(which later split in two)...

3) "Christians" pray to mary more than Christ hence the "Hail Mary" which is the chief prayer of the Rosary and also a very common prayer to say during mass and is usually the first prayer to be said upon the happening of some large scale disaster e.g. 9/11...

Please get your facts right regarding religion son, you might start a war...

ok.. its kinda deep and hard to explain but think of the jewish faith... whilst they believe in the same God and acknowledge the Old Testament they dont think that Jesus was the Messiah.

Its the same with Catholic people.. what happened was that the catholic people kept the ritualistic ways of the Jewish people after Christ.. then the protestants broke off and formed what is now... "Chistians" aka. followers of Christ.
It is true that Christianity is often used to bracket a few different forms involving Christ.. eg. Jewish, Catholic, Reformed, etc.
Christians these days dont pray to mary as they believe that Christ is the only person that we should have as a go between us and God.

Either way.. we all love God.. we just do it in a different way.. the way that we believe is faithful.
in no way am i bashing anyones choice of faith..
there are many Great catholics...
eg. Mother Teresa .. who I look up to greatly.
