The reply -

I can confirm that Nintendo and Sonic Solutions have made an agreement to allow Nintendo the use of Sonic Solutions' DVD technology in a future version of the Wii console. However, launch details, like where (regions or countries) it will sell, release date, or price (although it will be more expensive than the original version) are currently unavailable and won't be revealed until sometime in the latter half of 2007. It will not be available as an add-on attachment.

For those who already own a DVD player at home, the launch version of Wii will be the best choice. This version of the console is more affordable and you'll be able to enjoy Wii games immediately.

One more thing, please check out our important safety information for playing Wii on the following web page:

By the way, we have no plans to support anything higher than 480p on the Nintendo Wii. If we hear any different information, we will post it up on our website at www.nintendo.com.

Most people's stereos play them, most people already have a dedicated dvd player, most people have dvd playbock on their pc, if any of the 100+ million or so people that bought ps2s and xboxes still have them, then they can play dvds too! i reckon nintendo are on the money for leaving it out if it brings the price down.

how many people need a DVD player in the Wii would be more usefull because the fact is its just an extra bit of needless equiptment on the wii that will bump up the manurfacturing price, just as with the ps3 n 360 :l

anyway who hasent got a dvd player in there room, or downstairs or on there computer?????

Sure I have an Xbox, PS2 and blah blah that plays DVDs, but thats not the point. The idea is to not have to have 15 units sitting next to the TV providing all your different features. A spokesperson for Sonic has confirmed that they have signed a worldwide contract BUT Nintendo are still keeping everyone in the dark and won't reveal even a hint as to whether the rest of the world will be benefiting in the future. Maybe they are waiting to see how it goes in Japan first?
