It's basically a huge convention where several video game companies show off their games that are in developement. For example, in 2006, Nintendo was showing off Smash Bros. Brawl, the Wii and probably some Wii games, while EA Games was showing off The Sims 2 Pets and what not, and Sony was showing off PS3 and it's games. All of those games and consoles were only in developement at the time, but came out a couple of months later (except Brawl). This year, Nintendo might be showing off Animal Crossing for the Wii, but I don't think anyone's sure yet...

It's completely different, this is where game developers make a lot of their big announcements. It used to be even bigger but as of last year it is now a smaller event only open to game developers and selected journalists, no public anymore unfortunately.
