News \ Brawl Sequel may be Considered by Sakurai

The man behind Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Masahiro Sakurai has said he may have to consider a sequel to the popular game. Sakurai says like the two titles in the series before it Brawl was developed as being the last game in the series. In an interview with the UK Official Nintendo Magazine Sakurai has stated that he may have to consider the next title in the series.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine Sakurai said “It’s taken over three years to make Brawl but I actually stopped trying to include new ideas early on in development,"

He continued "What happened in the next year and a half was that we distilled the game down, worked out which ideas we had time to include and which we didn’t. Sadly, we had to trim out many great concepts just to keep within the time constraints. I had a lot more characters, for example…but sadly I can’t discuss which ones didn’t make it.

"There are 39 characters in the game this time around and just adding a few more wouldn’t be enough to justify a new game in my opinion; I’d have to draw a line in the sand and have a new approach to make it worthwhile. As long as the fans enjoy it, though, that’s what matters and in the distant future, I guess that might be something I have to consider.”

Considering the success of the Super Smash Bros. series it is highly unlikely that Brawl would be rounding off a trilogy. However Sakurai will have to decide if he will lead the development team of the sequel. After leaving Hal Laboratory, the developers behind Super Smash Bros Melee, he went on to form his own independent company which was eventually put on hold when he agreed to direct Brawl. Whether he would be willing to put this project on hold again for a forth Super Smash Bros project is unknown.

The trouble with a legitimate storyline is that most Nintendo characters never, ever speak!

Only Starfox and Fire Emblem have voice actors (+maybe 3rd party)
I think the next storyline should include text speech that many of the characters would have in their parent games (e.g. Fox has voice acting, Zelda speaks in text and say Link or Mario would not speak at all as in the current game)

Are you kidding? Add blood to Smash Bros.? Smash Bros. is good how it is, without blood. I'm 12 and just don't like games like that.

By the way Masahiro Sakurai doesn't work for Nintendo or anything, he was just asked to return as director for Brawl because Iwata asked him to. He wasn't planning on returning to do it again and instead would focus on his independent company but from what I gather he is possible considering changing his mind and might come back for a sequel.

In America, Melee came out in 2001 and in Aus it came out in 2002. So it's 7 years for USA and 6 years for AUS.

There's only 35 in Brawl he said there were cuts so perhaps 4 that we planned for final release didnt make it?, or perhaps he's referring to Zelda sheik as different character and the 3 Pokemon separate to make it sound better or to prove the point that more characters wont be enough?
