News \ Nintendo Explains SSBB Pal Delay

The date for Super Smash Bros. Brawl arriving in Australia (June 26) and Europe (June 27) is drawing near. The anticipated titled has however been available in the US since March 9, which has left many Pal gamers asking “hey Nintendo what’s the hold up?”

In an interview with The UK Official Nintendo Magazine Nintendo of Europe’s Laurent Fischer was asked “Was localisation the reason behind the pal delay”?

Fischer replied "Well, yeah, that's always been the big question, why do we have a delay for Smash Bros? You need to see it title by title. It's the same team, the same pool of teams, that have been localising and that have been proofing. But localisation is only one thing: production is another thing also, because at the moment we are not just producing Smash Bros for Europe, we're producing hundreds of first party games and third party games for locations all over the world.”

"So localisation issues are one part of the delay, but you also have production issues, logistic issues... so a release date is always the result of a large number of factors, and it's a complex decision process. It's not that we deliberately like to be late in Europe, and it's our job to take care of it, but to localise in six languages is always a challenge.”

Nintendo Explains SSBB Pal Delay

When asked about text being a possible cause for delay Fischer said, “It's not just text, this is a large game with lots of characters, and you must also remember that the voices of certain characters are different.”

"That means we have to record six different sets of voices for some characters. We kept voices in there that the game doesn't let you see, like the Japanese voices and such, but there are a lot of voices that are localised so we have to record the voices for certain characters in the game six times.”

Fischer went on to discuss that the sounds then have to be tested multiple times to make sure that they are connected to the correct trigger points. Various tests have to be carried out to make sure that the right sounds where used at the correct points in the game.

Fischer concluded the interview with"I realise that from time to time we have still been disappointing some people, but in general we have also been able to bring to them games which would have never been available before in a European market, and the time frame is slowly decreasing, so I'm positive for the future. We know that we are still not reaching the expectations of all the people, but we're really doing our best to resolve this."

Is over 3 months really an expectable delay for ‘localisation’ when you consider big name titles like GTAIV and Halo 3 were released worldwide?

I'm pretty sure it was along the lines of "WTF MTHERF***S WHERE'S MY F*** BRAWL!!!" ahem

And I agree with those below, especially that Australia doesn't NEED 6 different languages, just send us the US version, I'm pretty sure they don't let us choose languages in Aus versions anyway, so they're just putting on more languages for NO REASON.

Oh well, at least there's a release date now

Yeah was reading it and thought that to myself also. I mean voice and sound setup is not a good enough excuse in a 3 month delay... nope, sorry... doesn't fly with me.

super mario galaxy only takes one

you all know that SMgalaxy is big, well SSBB is 128 times bigger, it is a MASSIVE game, and it probably shouldnt have taken quite this long to convert but even still it's HUGE! and well worth the wait

nintendo isnt entirly to blame

I meant for future releases. Instead of releasing Japan and American versions months before pal, why not simply hold off the Japanese and American versions and coordinate a worldwide release.

If they told Japan and America it had been delayed until mid June they would be nonethewiser that the game had been sitting in the warehouses and ready to play for three months.

By the way I'm not happy with these excuses, if Nintendo wanted to they could have gotten it to us sooner, the fact is they don't make anywhere near as much money from pal regions.

I've always belived that SSB was delayed in PAL territories as there was/is a Wii shortage problem in Europe which Nintendo are going to rectify mid-year. There is no point releasing a mega-seller like SSB which will sell consoles when there is a Wii shortage, better to wait untill supply is up.
