Ever since the announcement of the "Wii-mote," Wii sympathizers have claimed that it is both innovative and the future of gaming while criticizing parties have claimed that it is impractical and unusable. While this debate has continued the Head of Wii development, Genyo Takeda has discussed what influenced the design of the "Wii-mote." Genyo Takeda claims that, "the DS had a big influence. We kept in mind how we could follow the DS's path. As many people had been predicting, we even considered including a touch panel on the controller and even considered something that's like a PC mouse or track pad in that can be used as a pointing device."
It is also claimed that it was "how to persuade users and designers who've gotten used to current interfaces" that was the major issue with the "Wii-mote."
While in my mind it is clear that the Wii is innovative and the future of gaming, the message from Nintendo is clear: The Wii is a console for the whole family as well as hardcore gamers and if you like the DS, you'll love the Wii.

Ah fair enough. Nintendo are always striving to be the non-conformist when it comes to their gaming technology...and hell, who can complain? I don't think there's been any fault with the design of their controls/handhelds to date.

DS interface is unique, never done before, it revolutionized the handheld platform. So nintendo is trying something new again, hopefully with more interesting things in the future.

I fail to see how the DS design has much to do with the Wii-more design. I reckon it follows more the Gamecube controller's design. It practically IS the Gamecube controller except split in 2 and wireless
