Guides \ MyWii.com.au's 2007 Christmas Guide

There's a real advantage to buying games at Christmas, you know what's out and you're not going to blow your money and miss out on a great title coming out next month. Why? Because everyone wants to get their Wii titles on the shelf for Christmas. It may be a daunting task buying for yourself or a loved one this Christmas as there are so many great titles on the shelf. So we've put together a quick list of some of our favorites!

Super Mario Galaxy

The game has only recently hit shelves yet in it's short time Super Mario Galaxy has climbed charts, taken out the competition and sold enough copies to fill a warehouse. Super Mario Galaxy takes the traditional 3D platformer scenario into deep space with it's unqiue micro-planet game play. Great for kids and adults, you'll find yourself taking Mario through a mind bending deep space adventure that defies all the traditional standards yet stays true to the core aspects of the series.

What we said in our review:

It's been a long time since we've played a game that is just so constantly interesting and varied. Between it's signature gameplay, constantly changing play style and general damn near perfect presentation, it's pretty hard to fault this game. You'll find a simple story coupled with high paced 'pick up and play' engrossing gameplay.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

If you're buying for an action adventure fan, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is going to be right up their alley. Sitting somewhere between a first person shooter and an adventure game, Metroid Prime 3 will challenge player's brawn with intense shootouts and challenge their brain with numerous puzzles. Featuring some of the most interactive controls in a first person shooter today, Metroid Prime 3 is a Sci-Fi epic adventure which will have players engrossed as they take an adventure across the galaxy.

What we said in our review:

You'll feel like you're on an adventure, moving between planets across the galaxy as you see fit, exploring and back tracking when new gear is acquired. For the intense explorer you'll find enough to satisfy your Metroid fiction needs and for anyone who hates that stuff, it's not going to be forced down your throat like previous Prime games. Gameplay mechanics have changed enough for players to have to learn a few new tricks, and environments are bigger, better and more alive.

Resident Evil 4

The long running franchise has made it's way to Wii with the remake of Resident Evil 4. RE4 is a great introduction to series for those joining midway as it takes a side step from a lot of the larger traditional Resident Evil staples. Instead you'll find yourself playing as Leon Kennedy, an ex Racoon City cop on a mission to save the presidents daughter. Moving away from the slow paced survival horror style, RE4 takes on the 3rd person action adventure genre. Featuring wild over the top gun play, brain teasing puzzles and enough cultist that you can run a chainsaw through, RE4 will challenge even the veteran gamers out there. The Wii Edition has been updated with new motion sensitive controls, and bundled with several side story missions so that this is a title that will last long after the holiday season.

Link's Crossbow Training and Wii Zapper Bundle

$50 for a kick ass game and cool new accessory? Crazy you say? Well call Nintendo crazy because that's exactly what they've given us this Christmas. Shipping as a bundle deal, The Wii Zapper is Nintendo's new answer to the light gun, allowing you to play with a rifle like controller to 'zap' your enemies. Well designed and easy to assemble, the Zapper comes bundled with Link's Crossbow Training, a game that any arcade shooter fan will love. Featuring a variety of challenges and great graphics, the bundle is a great Christmas present especially with the Zapper titles to follow after the holiday season.

What we said in our Wii Zapper review:

The Zapper is the best gun accessory on the market at the moment. It's light weight, well balanced and built well. Set up is an issue that players are going to have to deal with or hate it. There are other Zapper type casing systems on the market from third parties but out of what we've seen, the Zapper balances the requirements of shooting, button access, and joystick movement the best.

What we said in our Link's Crossbow Training review:

Great introduction to the Zapper, and fun while it lasts. If there'd been a few more game modes this could have easily scored higher. As a pack in game though, it's a pretty damn good deal!

The Simpsons Game

This is probably one of the few Simpsons games that really play out like an episode. We'll say this flat out though, there are issues in the game play. Nothing too huge, but a few. But that's the bad stuff, what's awesome about this game is the story which plays out pretty much like a genuine Simpsons episode. With all the characters being played by the TV cast, and written by some of the geekiest writers of the series, The Simpsons Game lampoons the gaming industry, taking you on a adventure from the Simpson's front door right up to having to battle it out against God in a DDR dance battle. Anyone who's been playing games since that early 90s will be on the floor laughing at the systematic ripping apart of all the worst aspects of the gaming industry that the game provides. Expect to meet a few geeky celebrity guest stars along the way too!

Guitar Hero 3

Never has a music franchise had such an amazing influence on society. The Guitar Hero series is by far the most entertaining and deep music series ever created and with Guitar Hero III gamers have a chance to be a part of some of the greatest legends of rock in easily the best Guitar Hero game made.

The soundtrack is superb, the gameplay is improved and impressive, online is great, the boss battles are fun and the challenge is welcomed. If you haven’t yet gotten into GH, be sure to buy this third addition straight away - it plays better than its older brothers and it's a perfect introduction to the franchise.

The Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess

This game has been available since day one of the Wii and it's still pretty much one of our favorites. Twilight Princess finds players in a far more mature setting than some of the previous Zelda games, taking them to a dark and transformed Hyrule where the power of Twilight threatens to envelope the world. Featuring hack and slash combat and classic Zelda puzzles, Twilight Princess is a great game for those new to the series, and those who may have been waiting for a more mature Zelda game after Wind Waker. The graphics are simply beautiful, and even a year later are still rarely surpassed by newer titles. With many memorable characters and a lot of replay value, this is another title that will get played long after others have been shelved. Just watch out, if you're buying it for someone they may already have it.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves

While it's an older game as far as 2007 goes, WarioWare: Smooth Moves is still a real winner in our books. Featuring gameplay that will throw your inhibitions in the bin, WarioWare revolves around high paced 'Micro-games', challenges which barely last 7 seconds in which you have to use the Wii Remote to complete a task. These can range from mimicking swinging a sword, flying by flapping your arms, or just picking someone's nose. The game play is seriously manic and disturbingly enjoyable. Backing this up is a great art style, sound, music and finally a simple sense of humor that will have both young and old giggling with glee. A true party game as well, WarioWare will have you and your mates on the floor in stitches trying to pull of some of the moves to win.

Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis

Rockstar Presents Table Tennis brings us back to some of the more arcady sports games out there, instead of going to super realism in its controls, Table Tennis goes for a much more pick up and play style. Featuring one of the best sporting atmospheres we've seen in a game, you'll find yourself in intense rounds with your opponents with serious satisfaction when you win.

What we said in our review:

The AI is great, and when you win, you'll feel like you've seriously screwed them over and not, like so many other games, that they've decided to let you win. If they were asking $100 for this game I would say no, but at $70, with it's addictive style of simple play, you'll suddenly find three hours gone out of your day when you were meant to be doing something productive
