www.itestate.com.au, they are in sydney and between them and
www.gamedude.com.au in queensland, I save about $500-$800 on a full computer even after postage to Tassie, they are both cheap for different things, gamedude has cheap monitors and a few video cards, and itestate are good for everything else, umart at
www.umart.com.au are pretty good too, but they can be a bit hard to get service from if you have a faulty product, they don't like dealing with it, lol

MSY are the cheapest by far.
Cheaper than gamedude, Umart, Disc shop etc
www.msy.com.au
They have branches in Morningside and Slacks Creek
If you can't be bothered driving there, you can get the stuff couriered to you.
You will save money by going through them.

Umart or Gamedude. Cheapest prices. Gamedude is in Springwood, so not too far from brisbane. Umart, there's some stores in brisbane. Obviously, I use the Gold Coast store. Umart is overall cheaper than Gamedude.

Well, for the case, I've decided to go with ebay, but for the working parts, I'm just gonna look around all the sites you mentioned and see which one's cheapest.

And should I get an 8600 GT or save up some more and get a GTS or 8800?

Up to you. 8600 GT isn't too bad, but it is a lower end card. You can get them for just over $100 for a descent one. If you are gonna buy 8800, you will want to spend a lot more, $300-$400, maybe more.

I think I'll get the GT. I don't want this upgrade project to take 4 months, saving for such an expensive card. >_<

GT will let you play the games you want, i think. Obviously, it won't be the highest resolution or all the setting's maxed out, but I know they do very well, especially because of the PCI-E 16x port. Many people have commented that they've been quite surprised and happy about the performance of these card's.

You decide you want to get into gaming later on, then you can get a higher end card. Just make sure you motherboard has dual PCI-E 16x, so you can upgrade in the future . That's for two graphics card's (SLI).

But keep in mind as well that unless you're buying two of the highest-end video cards to put in an SLI or Crossfire configuration, one card is generally better.

Yeah, I'm not gonna get SLI, 1 PCI-E 16x Port is quite enough for me, until I get a job and earn lots of money, anyway .

Oh, and can Core 2 Duos be easily overclocked? and is it worth it?

Sorry for all these questions, I've never actually upgraded my PC before (Well, I have installed some PCI cards, but they're simple as)

They can be overclocked. It just depends on your motherboard and how much cooling you have. From what i've read, overclocking is easily possible with stock cooling with the Core 2 Duo's. Again, it's a motherboard thing. Stick to the well known motherboard companies and you should be fine. I think it's safer to spend the extra money for a faster chip than buying a slower one to try to overclock. New 3.0ghz 6mb cache chips are out and they are about $270, $70 cheaper than the 4mb cache ones...

Performance of the 8600 series is just weak. The price/performance ratio of the 8800GT is excellent, it outperforms the 8800GTS and comes close to the GTX. Buying anything less for a gaming PC would be silly unless you just play old games. If you want to play things like Crysis you will struggle (even the 8800GT will only play it on medium).

MSY are cheap but they're also tools. They don't know wtf they're talking about, they never have things in stock and their customer assistance is almost as bad as their english. I buy everything I can from Scorptec now because they're a small amount cheaper but man are they better. They tell you whats in stock and you order it before you go there or get it delivered. If its in stock you'll get it. Unfortunately they're probably not in Brissy so it would be an online thing...

Would it be smart to invest in a better motherboard, to be future proof for later upgrades?

I disagree, I have an 8600GTS and I can run games up to and including Crysis, no problems, why waste the extra money on a card that over-performs, you may as well get one that will run todays games now, and then save money to get a better one in a few years when you need it

and if you look on the nvidia forums ALOT more ppl are having trouble with the 8800 series, they overheat and lockup and the drivers don't support them as well as the others, not to mention alot of ppl are having trouble with frequent pauses and chugging with certain games.
As with everything though, you can get one and not have a single problem, I am just outlining the points that helped me make my decision, if you have a monitor smaller than 30" a high end card is practically a waste because it only shows its true power at higher resolutions, there is only so much detail you can get at lower resolutions and I don't think you would notice that much difference on say a 19" or even 22" (what I have)

Isn't one of your motherboard's ram modules broken? If so yeah otherwise I think you should see how far you can save for the other parts before you sway and buy a game...
